Im looking for a wire manufacturing mill or company or several
companies that produce or manufacture gold filled wire for jewelry
use. Not a reseller or a distributor but the company that makes it
either here or in any other country. Gold filled wire is not to be
confused with gold plated or 14 kt wire or some other solid gold wire.
(many companies make that) they are two different items and entirely
two different technologies make them. Plese dont tell me Stern and
Leach or Hoover and Strohm im already familar with them. There are two
are three here to my knowledge and they are owned by stern and leach
thus the same company. |

Hello bigbruiser-ga,
I'm always a bit surprised to re-discover how tricky it can be to find
product manufacturers, even in the age of the Information
Superhighway!
You're right about Stern & Leach -- they also are affiliated with
Cookson Precious Metals, so I can't count them as a potential
supplier.
One company I found is A.T. Wall, who has a Precious Metal Tubing Unit:
http://www.atwall.com/atwall/index.cfm?pg=cap.cfm?view=42&docID=103
As their site says:
-----
The Precious Metal Tubing Unit provides quality, precision tubular
shapes in a wide range of precious metals and has been the cornerstone
of the A.T. Wall Company since 1886. Over the years, the company has
served the needs of silversmiths, and manufacturers of jewelry,
military aviation systems, medical, electrical and superconductor
devices industry.
..A.T. Wall offers an exceptionally large range of tubular shapes and
sizes, which can be provided in all grades of gold, silver and other
precious metals.
MATERIALS
Fine gold, Karat gold, Gold-filled & electronic gold alloys...
-----
So...they seem to be a manufacturer and supplier of gold-filled tubing
(i.e. wire) to the jewelry-supply industry.
Before I search further, I wanted to check in with you. Is A.T. Wall
the type of company you're looking for. If the answer is Yes...great!
But if not, please explain why they don't meet your needs. The more
I understand what you're looking for, the better I can focus my
research efforts.
Thanks.

Yes this is definitely the type of company that would produce this but
the Wall company does not make gold filled wire---but you are on the
right track.

Great...I'll keep looking for other companies that may have what you need.
But one additional question...Why did you say that A.T. Wall does not
have gold-filled wire? Their site indicates that they do. What
information leads you to believe otherwise?

Thanks for the clarification.
Thus far, I have been able to confirm only one company that makes gold
filled wire. In response to my e-mail query, they wrote:
"First we will need to know the quality of Gold Filled. The most
popular is 14/20. Second will be the temper you need and third will be
the diameter. Next will be the quantity you will need and how you
would like it supplied, either in coil form or on a spool."
I'm still trying to find other companies that can provide this
material, and I have a few queries out.
How many companies would you consider an acceptable answer to your
question? And do you mind waiting a while for information, as it
sometimes takes companies a day or two (especially with the weekend
pending) to answer my queries?

Ok I would take one company that would be able and willing to make the
wire in this country or almost anywhere else but the US would be much
better.
I sell lots and lots of wire and would take almost any size, shape or
diameter preferable on 25 lb spools.
I sell over 300 different sizes shapes and tempers of gold filled wire
so anything would help but my number #1 sellers are 21 ga. square
14/20 dead soft and half hard.
If they make 12/20 its ok i will take almost any type of gold filled
wire they can produce and will work with them in any way to get any
kind of gold filled wire.==============Right now it takes three
distributors to keep me going and sometime they cant keep up plus our
business is increasing quickly and i need a big player to work with me
on this----------CAUTION---Many times a small distributor or jobber
will tell you they do this or that but basically they just get it from
the mill and put a profit on it and resell it. I need to go right to
the source. And im looking for a long term relationship for worldwide
sales.

Thanks again for the update. I will post an answer as soon as I have
confirmation from the company that they are -- indeed -- a
manufacturer (rather than a middle man) for gold-filled wire. I also
hope to hear from several other companies on this same matter.
As the weekend has now begun, it may not be until early next week that
I hear back from folks. But as soon as I have a confirmation, I'll
let you know.

Hello again,
Wow. As I've pushed these guys for information -- Do you *really*
manufacture gold-filled wire -- they've dropped out one by one.
One fellow told me point blank that he's been in the business umpteen
years, and he didn't think there was any suppliers other than Stern &
Leach.
I'll cast a broader net, and see if I can find anyone internationally
who might be able to meet your needs.
Stay tuned.

He may be right, you see my problem, you rarely get anytype of service
or pricing from a monopoly. I think there may be one in Germany or
thats what i hear i dont know that for a fact. I will take any
company anywhere that can make me gold filled wire.
