Question ID: 316115
How do I correct the unexpected incease in the size of a Microsoft Word document?
When I started the revision on the existing document is was 1,200 KB.
I moved the graphics out of text boxes and placed them directly in the
document, and eliminted the text boxes. The other change I made was
to attempt to create an Index. I did not like the result and removed
the index field marking throughout the document. I did the manually.
...... now the document is 45,160 KB.
What is this?

Hi janis18,

Go to File / Properties and see if "Save Preview Picture" is checked -
if so, uncheck it and save your document. Please let us know if that
helps.

The "Save Preview Picture" field on the property screen is unchecked.

Hi janis18,

Try this:

"Following a tip from here somewhere, I copied everything in the 70MB
file, except the final carriage return, and pasted it all into a new
document. The whole 76 pages.
The new file was 4MB!."

More suggestions from the same forum:

"There are a number of reasons for excessive file size, including:
1. Fast Saves: Disable this at on the Save tab of Tools | Options.

Tools / Options / Save
Unclick "Allow fast saves"

2. Preview Picture: Clear the check box on the Summary tab of File |
Properties.

3. Versions (File | Versions): Make sure "Automatically save version on
close" is not turned on.

4. Revisions (Tools | Track Changes):
Highlight Changes: Make sure "Highlight changes on screen" is turned on.
Accept/Reject Changes: If "Accept All" or "Reject All" is available
then revisions are present; accept or reject all changes, then turn
Track Changes off.

5. Embedded True Type fonts (Tools | Options | Save)

6. Embedded graphics: When feasible, it is preferable to link the
graphics. This happened to me, but my files grew from 4MB to 70MB!

Other things like disable fast saves, make sure track
changes isn't on etc may also work.

Tools / Options / Save
Unclick "Allow fast saves"

I think this is it, I just fixed a 5M doc to 360K.

Access File/Versions, clear the checkbox at the top and delete all the
versions inside the box one-by-one. In my case, I had to close the doc
and reopen it to get rid of all the versions. Theres also an icon that
looks like a pile of paper next to the "save" icon at the bottom of
the screen, that takes you directly to the version dialog.
