Hi shockdoc,

The following information and resources are what students recommend
for study and preparation for Step 1 USMLE. If you access any of the
Medical Study Review Forums the same advice is repeated over and over.
I trust the information provided will help you tremendously. Please
click on all links to access more information.

Advice from the Class of 2003:
http://webcampus.med.drexel.edu/osa/usmle/usmleadvice03.htm

What advice would you offer to a second year student as they prepare
for USMLE Step 1?

*Be focused and study hard for about 4-5 weeks. You need to do TONS
of practice questions. I really liked Kaplan QBank. Don't give up
all fun activities - as long as you study hard you can go out and do
fun stuff, too.

*Kaplan, Kaplan, Kaplan... if you can't afford the course, buy the
books from someone and just pay for the full length exams. Very well
organized (I took the Med Pass option b/c I wanted to choose what
lectures..."

Advice from the Class of 2002:
http://webcampus.med.drexel.edu/osa/usmle/usmleadvice02.htm

What advice would you offer to a second year student as they prepare
for USMLE Step 1?

*Think about how much you really learn from a lecture, and think about
how much energy you'll have left over to self-study after a full day
of lectures. (Guess that sounds like a pretty biased opinion!) I spent
some time Christmas break and non-pre-module-exam weekends reviewing
and just getting organized, but most of the hard-core studying was
done studying for the finals (which was an excellent review for the
boards in and of itself) and then after the finals were over for the
4-5 weeks of May/June before I took the boards.

*Think about how you learn best. If you learn well in a lecture
format a course might be helpful because a lot of information is
presented to you. Just remember you still have to come home and study
after a day of lecture! If you learn better by reading and taking
notes on your own, then you might do better with out taking a review
course. In either case, make sure you take a lot of practice tests.

*I took Kaplan, because I took them for MCAT, and the price was ok. I
took a course because I 1) need discipline! and 2) like to do a lot
of questions. I think the Med Pass was great- I got books, plus
access to lectures on video, full length Step 1's on computer at the
center and by CDROM, plus I could do it on my own schedule. I think
it helped me for the reasons I named why I did it, but I don't think
prep courses are necessary to do well. Just get good-reviewed
materials, set a schedule, etc...

*Kaplan's books and practice exams were helpful. I can't imagine
sitting through more classes - I think it's important to take time to
integrate the information for yourself instead of trying to stuff
pre-packaged material in."
