Hello Paul161~

Sats vary, but some statistics show that one in eight teenagers may
suffer from depression (?Statistics,? About Teen Depression,
http://www.about-teen-depression.com/depression-statistics.html ), and
in general, it?s thought that between two and four percent of people
have clinical depression; 17.5 million Americans suffer from clinical
depression (?Statistics & Demographics,? Prairie Public,
http://www.prairiepublic.org/features/healthworks/depression/stats.htm
)

Common symptoms of clinical depression include:
?	?A persistent sad, anxious or "empty" mood
?	Sleeping too little or sleeping too much
?	Reduced appetite and weight loss, or increased appetite and weight gain
?	Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
?	Restlessness or irritability
?	Persistent physical symptoms that don't respond to treatment [such
as headaches, chronic pain, or constipation and other digestive
disorders]
?	Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
?	Fatigue or loss of energy
?	Feeling guilty, hopeless or worthless
?	Thoughts of death or suicide?
(?Symptoms,? National Mental Health Association,
http://www.nmha.org/ccd/support/symptoms.cfm )

For more information on symptoms, please see ?Depression,? BUPA,
http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/depression.html

For information about childhood depression, see ?Childhood Development
Symptoms,? Essortment,
http://la.essortment.com/childhooddepres_rhfw.htm

Doctors say that if a person experiences five or more of these
symptoms for more than two weeks, or if the symptoms are severe enough
that they interfere with daily life, they should seek a physician?s
help immediately.

Kriswrite

I don't know that there is an accurate way to answer your question in
the manner you have asked it. Depression is such a multi-faceted
affliction that any question about statistics would have to be focused
on what type of depression we are discussing. People of various ages,
backgrounds, mental and phsycial problems have a wide variety of
depressive disorders and the list is actually enormous in terms of
what each of them are called and what causes them.

In addition, we'd need to know where, regionally, you are inquiring
about since statistics vary from one part fo the world to another.

Furthermore, statistics are rarely, if ever, current. Logically one
can't have an acurate view of what is happening now, but at best can
have the most current information about the recent past. Usually
statistics on health issues are derived from known cases of the past
which often take 2-3 years to compile. It would be much easier to
account for cases say, in 1999 or 2000 and virtually impossible to
find statistics dating as recent as yesterday.

As for symptoms and behaviors, the same applies. Each disorder differs
to some degree and each disorder can manifest itself different in
different age brackets. One would need to focus specifically in a
particular disorder in order to do any quality discussion about it
justice.
