I have a notebook toshiba running win95 but my network is win98. When
I try to connect it cannot read the network. Is there someway that I
can connect up that you may know of and help me to do so?

Hi leetim-ga,

My guess is that the protocols do not match. The default protocol for
windows 95 is NetBEUI and the default protocol for Windows 98 is
TCP/IP.

On your W98 machine, please go to Start / Setting / Control Panel /
Network / Configuration.

Do you see the NetBEUI listed? If not, please click on Add.

Highlight Protocol.
Highlight Microsoft under Manufacturers
Highlight NetBEUI under Network Protocols

Save and reboot.

Please let me know how that goes.

First in W95 : Right click on your network neighborhood icon; go to properties;
You will see configuration, Identification, Access Control Buttons.
1)In configuration page click on Add; you get Select network component
type window; click on Client, wait till windows builds the driver
database; next you get Select Network client window; click on
Microsoft on you left side; you get all the manufactures list on your
right side of the window; add all the clients one by one to the
configuration window by repeating the same procedure. Select Client
for microsoft networks in Primary network logon. Next click on File
and Print sharing button and tick both the box if you you want your
files & printer to be shared in network
2)After successfully adding all the clients into configuration box w95
also adds the network adapter also automatically. Now click on
Identification button, type the computer name(Any name) in the
corresponding field provided, Type the workgroup name(Any name) in the
corresponding field provided.
Finally click ok; your computer restarts; IMPORTANT : logon with any
user name and password when prompted while you login into windows95 or
98 to access the network.
In W98 : Repeat the same procedure in case of w98 also as it is stated
above in w98 and restart the computer with any user name & password.
IMPORTANT : While providing workgroup name under Identification button
Both in w95 & w98 the workgroup name should exactly be the same name
where as the computer names should be different.

Double Click on your network icon you must be able to view & access
all computers in your network. Suppose in case you fail at this point,
try to search the exact name of the computer in start\find\computer by
providing the exact name what ever you have in the identification.
Regards

I have not been able to get back to what I was doing, partly because I
have been very busy with other internet work at home, and also because
this 95 computer is a laptop.(It is not mine, it is my son in laws),
but it is PAINFULLY slow. I thought a toshiba 251A bought new about
1999 would be up to speed with win95, but it takes so long to do
things that it is going to be quite hard to get it connected(
rebooting and so on)
But what worries me more is that I have 4 computers on this network
all running well and all running 98, and I dont want to stuff up my
network using this netbui instead of the tcp/ip I use now.
But I also have two 98 computers outside in the garage which I am
trying to use internet sharing on (not with my adsl network) but with
a modem. If you dont mind, can you give me some time, perhaps this
weekend, when I can attend to the matters? Are you in USA about 12 hrs
behind our Perth West Aust time and what times are you available - I
mean most computer people work well into the small hours. If I know I
can time my trial to coincide with you?
