Hello,

For months now I've been having a problem with my ignition, which the
garage (main VW garage in Israel) repeatedly fails to identify or fix.

The car is a 1996 Volkswagen Golf VR6, manual transmission.

The symptom: I start the car, the engine runs perfectly for 1 second
and then completely shuts off. The problem will sometimes disappear
for a few days and then reappear.

Pressing the gas pedal will often solve the problem and allow the car
to start. It often seems as if the car needs to pass some RPM
threshold for it to succeed. This threshold gradually rises, and after
a few days starting at 6000RPM won't even do it, and the car is towed
to the garage (3 times so far).

They initially blamed the immobilizer and recoded the key. They
claimed it solved the problem, but it reappeared in a few days. Then
they cleaned and replaced various elements in the fuel system - again
reappeared in a few days. They currently have no clue what's the
problem and it seems like they will keep running tests forever.

I developed a 'feel' for the problem which may or may not help
understand it: It seems to me as if there is some device that is
supposed to kick in during ignition, but does so in delay. During
ignition I can feel whether the device is working and whether the
engine is going to stop. My guess is that by pressing the gas pedal,
I'm buying some time during which the device can start, thereby
increasing the chance of a successful ignition.

I will pay the $40 to the person who could produce a text which I
could give to the garage and would cause them to identify/fix the
problem. Example: "Tell them to switch off the Gluglu, replace the
Blabla and turn the Gluglu back on."

Thanks!

Hi wilfer,

This can be very tricky to dignose online, as you probably know! Would
your VW be any of the following 96 Golf's? I'm betting yours is the
second or fourth one!

L4-1781cc 1.8L SOHC (ACC) Can
L4-1896cc 1.9L DSL Turbo (1Z) TDI
L4-1896cc 1.9L DSL Turbo (AAZ)
L4-1984cc 2.0L SOHC (ABA)

If you let me know, I MAY be able to help you. At the least, perhaps,
I can point you in the proper direction.

Regards,
crabcakes

Hi crabcakes,

Golf VR6 has a 2792cc V6 engine.

I know this is not really an online research task, but I figured
someone might know the answer from experience.

Thanks for helping out.

Hi wilfer,

I'm unable to pinpoint the cause, but you may want to show your mechanic this TSB
http://www.gti-vr6.net/library/TSBs/1995_GTI_VR6_TSBs.htm

You said your VW was a '96. I could only find VWs with all the info
you gave, listed under '95 models. This model has even more problems
than the two above that I had suspected!

Possibilities with yours are:
Generator B+ Terminal, Connection
Induction System, Oil Accumulation
Electrical Contact Enhancer
Central Locking Sytem
Heated oxygen sensor

Also, try reading around this site:
http://www.cartalk.com/
They accept e-mails regarding car problems,(You may have to wait a
long while for a response). They're on Public Radio in the US. Not
only are they car experts, they are hilarious!

Good Luck to you!

Hi crabcakes!

Thanks for the detailed info, but I have no idea how to use it to help
them solve the problem. I'll look into it and see if I find something.

Thanks for helping out!

Does this car have a ballast resistor? I have seen a stiuation with
much older cars where the you can start them, but they won't continue
to run once you release the ignition key from the starting position.
The ballast resistor was replaced. ...bill in Corvallis, Oregon, usa

I don't know what that is - how can I find out if I have one?

Anyway, what you describe doesn't seem to match my problem.

Thanks for trying!
