Question ID: 316576
How do I open the case of an IBM infinity 3000. I need both sides, top
and front taken off. ($5)

No, this is NOT a trick question. The IBM site indicates that this is
one of the best cover designs in that it does not use any screws. I
can get the side panel off by sliding it forward and then up. None of
the other panels slip or slide. If you have ever taken the cover of of
an IBM Inifinity 3000, this becomes an easy 8 bucks....

Is there any chance that you are referring to a Type 8476 Netfinity
Server 3000? If so, please note that the top and right side is an
assembly, while the front is comprised of the drive bay covers and
cosmetic frame.

If you are indeed interested in a Type 8476 Netfinity 3000 Server, I
can provide you with a link to information that will help you
disassemble down to its individual components.

Yes, you are so right...

It is a NETfinity...not an INfinity...

ob1knobie-ga:

The following link should provide you with as much information as is
currently available for servicing an IBM Netfinity 3000 server:

Type 8476 Netfinity Server 3000 Hardware Maintenance Manual
ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/pc_servers/09n1064.pdf

If you refer to the 'Locations' chapter, you will find instructions
and diagrams for removing the various internal components of the
server, as well as the bottom cover. You will note from the exploded
diagram on page 199 ('Parts Listing') of the manual that the top and
right side cover assembly is not normally removed to service this
server. As well, from that same diagram, you will see that the front
cover is also an assembly that is normally not removed in servicing
the server.

If you refer to the 'Internal Drives' section, you will see how to
best remove the drive covers and the top handle assembly. If you look
at the 'Bottom Cover' section, along with the 'System Board' section,
you will see how to remove the bottom cover and the mother board.
After you have removed all of these items, you should be able to see
the plastic hooks and clips used to retain the front, top and right
side covers to the internal frame.

I hope that this information helps!

Although the answer did not have instructions for removing the side
covers, it did have instructions for removing the drive cage. Removing
the drive cage will allow me to complete my project. So 4 stars and a
hip hip hurrah!
