I just bought a new computer with Windows XP professional installed. However, when I go to install the service pack from the Microsoft site, it informs me after inventorying my system that the OS could be a pirated version. When I asked the seller, he told me to use the serial number on the XP CD that came with the computer. Now, the computer came with the XP Professional shrink wrapped cd with its serial number. How can I input this new serial number and register my OS with Microsoft without having to do a fresh reinstall and deleting all that has been saved to my computer? |

Hi!! The solution to your problem can be found at the Microsoft Knowledge Base website: "Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 328874 - HOW TO: Change the Volume Licensing Product Key on a Windows XP SP1-Based Computer": This article describes how to change the Windows XP product key... I recommend you the use of the Activation Wizard rather than scripts. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;328874 I hope this helps you. | |
