For my Grandfather's 80th birthday, we are trying to come up with a
good list of events and famous births from the year 1924. Where can I
look for this information, and is there a way to look up his exact
birthdate of April 23, 1924?

Dear misterrachel-ga,
I am assuming that you are US based, so this research is on US
information. If this is not the case, then do ask for clarification.

There are several famous birthdays for 1924. These include Doris Day,
Marlon Brando, George Bush and Jimmy Carter.
There is a long list on this page.
http://famousbirthdays.com/bday_123.html
If this does not work got to the main page and access ?birthdays by the year?.
http://famousbirthdays.com/

Events during this year included:
02/12/1924 Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" premiers at Carnegie Hall (NYC)
05/10/1924 J Edgar Hoover appointed head of FBI
06/15/1924 Native Americans are proclaimed US citizens
11/30/1924 1st photo facsimile transmitted across Atlantic by radio

These pages will give details of many more events which occurred that
year, all give the exact day and month.

You could try the Newspaper Archive for a newspaper of the relevant
date in your grandfather?s area. (I have no personal knowledge of how
good this site is)

A good search strategy on Google for local events would be:
timeline 1924 ?name of place? OR 1924 "name of place" history

I hope this answers your question. If it does not, or the answer is
unclear, then please ask for clarification of this research before
rating the answer. I shall respond to the clarification request as
soon as I receive it.
Thank you, and congratulate your grandfather for me on the day.

Sorry,
I should have added that if you cannot find any information
specifically for for April 23, 1924, a good idea would be to go to a
good library where they may have on microfilm, copies of a major
newspaper for the period, such as New York Times or the Boston Globe.
