hello, I wish to have my site www.five.org.uk listed on Google.
You obtain search results from DMOZ.org, and I have been trying to get
my site listed there without success. Is there anything you can do to
help? Thank you.

Hello Tadz ~

Your site IS listed in Google's search index. If you do a search for
it, that is, place your URL in the Google search box, you get the
following results,

"Showing web page information for www.five.org.uk

      Xenophobic Persecution in the UK
Thames House on Millbank, the London headquarters of
the Security Service. Newsgroup members join in the
      discussion. Peter Krüger ...

"Google can show you the following information for this URL:

     * Show Google's cache of www.five.org.uk
     * Find web pages that are similar to www.five.org.uk
     * Find web pages that link to www.five.org.uk
     * Find web pages that contain the term "www.five.org.uk"

   - ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=www.five.org.uk++&btnG=Google+Search

Using the Google Toolbar, your site has a PageRank of 5/10.

Checking pages that link to www.five.org.uk, there are 25 links, and
checking pages that contain the term www.five.org.uk, returned 301
links.

===========================

If you are talking about getting listed on the Open Project Directory,
(DMOZ.org), what category would you want to be listed in?

For instance, in Yahoo's directory, your site is listed in:
Category: United Kingdom > Security Service (MI5)

Whereas, the Open Directory Project has a category
Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Government: Intelligence Services

But this doesn't really cover your site's content, as that category is
more about the Intelligence Service sites themselves than about sites
which mention them.

Other classifications within the United Kingdom are:

    - Advisers and Commissioners
    - Agriculture
    - Cabinet Office
    - Communications
    - Crime and Policing
    - Crown
    - Culture, Media and Sport
    - Defence*
    - Economy
    - Education and Training
    - Embassies and Consulates*
    - Employment
    - Environment
    - Equality Issues
    - Flags@
    - Health
    - Home Office
    - Information Security
    - Information Services
    - Inquiries
    - Intelligence Services
    - International Affairs
    - Legal System
    - Local Government and the Regions
    - Parliament
    - Postal Services
    - Reform
    - Regulatory Bodies
    - Research Councils
    - Rural Affairs
    - Science and Technology
    - Tourist Boards@
    - Trade and Industry
    - Transport
    - Welfare
[* denotes a category which has an editor]

With the recommendation to see also:

    - Regional: Europe: Government
    - Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Society and Culture: Issues
    - Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Society and Culture: People:
      Royal Family
    - Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Society and Culture: Politics
    - Society: Government
    - Society: Government: Multilateral: Regional: European Union

Provided you find the most suitable category within DMOZ, it would help to know:

1. Have you submitted your site to DMOZ.org for that category?
2. Is there an editor for that category?
3. If not, have you tried going a level higher or to the top to
find an editor who can assist you?

As you can see, there is a dearth of editors for categories for the
United Kingdom, but there are some editors listed at a higher level,
that is for "United Kingdom" proper. You can find their contact
information on this page:

===========================

While it is true that Google presently uses the contents within DMOZ
for it's Directory, it has its own crawlers for its search engine.
While you are not listed in the directory, your site IS listed within
Google's search index.

Google only has an arrangement with DMOZ and really has no control
over sites which are listed there. If you want to be included within
the DMOZ directory, you will have to submit your site via and/or
contact the appropriate editor(s), if there is one. Getting listed in
DMOZ usually takes a very long time because of the general lack of
editors in many categories, and there really is nothing we can do to
help along those lines.

==========================

If your question is actually about getting listed in DMOZ, and later
in Google's directory (as opposed to Google's search index), then I
believe it has been answered.

If your question is rather about being listed in Google's search
engine, as stated, you are already listed.

Any clarification of what you are trying to accomplish would be
helpful if you don't feel you have an answer to your question here.

hi, Serenata, Google Answers Researcher.

to clarify the question. I am trying to get my site www.five.org.uk
listed in DMOZ.org in category
http://dmoz.org/Society/Issues/Conspiracy/

I have been sending submissions to DMOZ once a month for one year, and
two months ago I wrote to staff@dmoz.org requesting an answer, as to
why they have not listed my site. Every time, DMOZ have made no
response whatsoever.

The editors for Society/Issues are "turtle1776, tenjin" and I am
sending them a copy of this email for their information. DMOZ
generally do good work and I would like an answer as to whether they
can list my site, or if they cannot, what is the reason. My site
contains facts about the Security Services (MI5) but it is mainly a
conspiracy site, hence its preferred category.

If you at Google have any contact with DMOZ, perhaps you do, then
please request a response from one of these editors, or the DMOZ
staff. I have put a lot of work over several years into my website,
with more additions planned soon, and while 200,000 visits is quite
good, with inclusion in DMOZ directory it would do even better. Google
obtains its directory solely from DMOZ and thus we depend on their
efforts.

There is no commercial aspect to my site since it is purely a personal
project, and indeed I have spent quite a lot of my own money on these
matters.

"Category: Society: Issues: Conspiracy"

http://www.five.org.uk

Persecuted by the Security Service

Exposes an MI5 operation of illegal harassment through the UK media,
public molestation, and verbal abuse.

Hi again Tadz ~

DMOZ is "staffed" by volunteers, and I'm afraid we have no influence
or control over what they do.

You seem to have done all you can (and should) do to get your site
listed in DMOZ. Although it is scant comfort, you are not alone, and
there are literally hundreds of complaints about DMOZ for:

1.) Not getting a site listed; and
2.) No response to email inquiries.

While DMOZ is a great idea, the fact that it is run by volunteers and
that there are so many complaints would make you wonder how long it
will remain a viable option.

The answer to your question is "No, there is nothing we can do to
help". We have no influence with DMOZ.

Since I couldn't help you achieve your goal, although I did
technically answer your question, you might want to go ahead and close
out this question. I'm sorry we can't give you any other advice than
what you have already done to no avail.

Regards,
Serenata

No-one from DMOZ responded to my message of 16/March, which is
consistent with Serenata's statement about there being hundreds of
complaints against DMOZ. I still hope that DMOZ will reply to this
message, and either include my website, or tell me why they will not
do so.

There may be an obvious reason for the lack of response - my site was
originally submitted in "Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Government"
category, which is edited by "modweb" which is Ministry of Defence in
UK. My conspiracy website about Security Service (UK secret police)
would be unpopular with Ministry of Defence editor and they would have
taken steps to ensure its exclusion from DMOZ.

Robert Skelton's view that "4) The editors actually work for the
government and only list conspiracy theories that have no basis or
that are unlikely to cause a stir" may therefore be surprisingly
accurate. However, because DMOZ is a dictatorship, nothing can be done
about its editors improper choices as to selection.

Again, I request a response from DMOZ. If they don't respond, then I
will be adding my name to the "hundreds of complaints about DMOZ", on
the obvious grounds of improper partisanship/censoring of their
editors.

Possibilities:

1) The editors have their own agenda that disagrees with your site.
This is a common problem within Open Directory

2) Your site has been flagged for some reason, perhaps your initial
submission concerned them in some way - maybe an attempt at a
duplicate listing, or the way you worded your submission, or the site
was not related to the topic at that time

3) The editors actually know of you personally and they don't like you
or your ideas

4) The editors actually work for the government and only list
conspiracy theories that have no basis or that are unlikely to cause a
stir

The reality is that if the editors don't want to list you, there is
nothing you can do.
