British Telecom has an on-line directory at http://www.bt.com/
Directory enquiries is the sixth link down in the dark blue box on the
right.

You can also register with http://www.192.com/, which calls itself the
largest UK directory enquiry service.  Free registration gives you 20
free searches per month and you can only search on WHO+WHERE or
WHAT+WHERE. However, since you know your friend's name for the WHO,
and have Aberdeen for the WHERE that should be no problem.

I have tested both these with my name and one other, and both worked.
However, if your friend has chosen to be ex-directory, the number will
not be available.

It might sound contradictory when I said that I tested with two names,
and yet I also said I use the sites regularly.  The test tonight was
to see if the sites were working OK now.  They can be extremely slow
at times.

www.ukphonebook.com is an alternative service provider using the same
core data as BT's website. Site requires Javascript, but is more
browser-friendly than the BT one, I find.
