Dear knowsy12-ga;
Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question.
Your friend is right! You can indeed petition the court to expunge, or
seal, your criminal records effectively erasing them to the extent
that for most purposes you can treat prior arrests or convictions as
though they never occurred. Like many court actions you can do this on
your own but as Benjamin Franklin so aptly put it, a person who
represents himself in court has a fool for a client. You really need
to be informed about the legal procedures when asking the court to
expunge a record so I?d highly recommend you contact a lawyer, or some
other qualified person to assist you in making this request of the
court. However, there are resources out there now days that walk a
person through virtually every step of the process. Having said that I
will address sources for both legal representation methods and
self-help methods below.
If you were placed on court supervision for an Illinois criminal
misdemeanor violation, and have no other misdemeanor or felony
convictions, you are most probably eligible for an expungement. I
cannot recommend anyone in particular or offer legal advice to you
personally with regard to any legal action so I have chosen some
sources for assistance and information for you at random. These
sources will be able to assist you further or provide you with
information that will lead you to additional sources of assistance:

?How much does it cost to do it yourself?? Well, after carrying that
burden around with you all those years, you?ll probably be surprised
to know that the cost to have your record expunged is a lot less that
it costs to pay a simple traffic ticket:
Filing Fee for Petition: $ 60.00
Certified Copy of Disposition (each one): $ 9.00
Expunging State Rap Sheet: $ 40.00
Total Cost: $106.00 (This is the least it will cost to have one item
expunged from your record.)
Having been in law enforcement for more than 20 years and having
actually participated in an expungement process once myself on an
occasion when I truly felt like the person?s exemplary record in the
years following his arrest and conviction warranted it, I can ease
your mind by telling you that the procedure itself is really no big
deal.
