I need some help troubleshooting my computer. I have been experiencing
irregularities with my system that I though were caused by not enough
physical memory. I am now wondering if it could be a virus. At any
rate, something is definetely not right. Can anyone help?

I have used the Symantec removal tools for Netsky, Klez, Beagle and
Blaster. Nothing found. Anytime I try to run Windows update or
use any kind of virus scanner, my computer restarts itself. I
even went to the Symantec and Housecall website to do an online virus
scan of my system and my puter' crashed both times. I'm stumped.

Symptoms Include:

1. Computer unexpectedely restarts when running a virus scan (with
Norton it's always when it gets to this file...C:\documents and
settings\local settings\temp\ns_temp). I took the liberty of deleting
the ns_temp file and scanning again. This time, Norton made it to
almost 10,000 files scanned before my system crashed again.

2. It all started 2 weeks ago with Windows Media Player. When
listening to music my computer unexpectedely restarts and then gets
"stuck" in restart mode(keeps starting then crashing). This is why I
suspected the memory.

3. I have received this error recently, when using Norton, and don't
know if it has any bearing...
NAV32.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows.

Each time my computer automatically restarts as if it's being told not
to let me fix it. And my Zone Alarm setting get all changed. Nothing
else is wrong, I can send email, surf the internet, copy and paste
etc. There is nothing "suspicious" in my registry (run) and nothing I
don't recognize in my running processes.

Is this a virus? Or a problem with my computer? How can I find out if
it won't let me scan for a virus, even in safe mode? I want to try and
fix it before I give up and take it in for repair. An opinion on what
virus I might have, how I can find out if it is a virus or if their
might be something else wrong with it would be very appreciated. Any
other info is welcome as well.

If I understood you well, you are using Windows XP and your PC restart
itself without any error message. In Windows XP, the default setting
is for the computer to reboot automatically when a fatal error occurs.
To fix the problem we must know what is the error that it is crashing
your PC. So if my asumptions are right please as a first step do the
following:
- Disable automatic rebooting:
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and
Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the
necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Now when the error occurs, you will see it. You still have to solve the problem.

Please let me know if I am in the right way or not. I will wait your
response for continue helping you to fix your PC.

Regards.

Hi mnathan,

Here's what I suggest - try HijackThis.

HijackThis:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

After it scans your computer and makes a log, post it on this forum,
under "PC Troubleshooting":
http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

They will have a look and see if you have anything that you shouldn't.

Good luck!

i suggest also to update your system from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

If the problem persists you can have a fisical problem with your hard
