Question ID: 317288
I have a HP CP1700 color injet printer connected by a USB cable to a
G4 Macintosh, OS 9. The Macintosh is also connected to our local
network. I want to be able to share the printer so that a Macintosh
G5, OS 10.2, can print to that printer. How?

Hello rooknyc-ga:

You can consult this Apple Knowledge Base document
(http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75080) for more
information about USB Printer Sharing under Mac OS 9.

From what I take from the documentation, the Client (i.e. your Mac G5)
can only use Mac OS 9 to print to the Shared printer. This is probably
not acceptable for your use. However, you can do the following (as
outlined in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107060):

1) Connect the HP CP1700 printer to your Mac G5.
2) Install the Mac OS 9 drivers for the HP printer on your G5.
3) Turn on USB Printer Sharing under Classic on your G5. (You can grab
it from the first URL, above.)
4) Select the Shared Printer from the Chooser on your OS 9 G4.

This solution will let you:
a) Print from Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 apps on your Mac G5. (Proof:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/printers.html)
b) Print from Mac OS 9 on your Mac G4.

Let me know if you need detailed instructions on how to do this. Also
let me know if this is a satisfactory answer or if it works/doesn't
work - I can offer more help.

Thanks,

The printer is connected via USB to the G4 which is running OS9.
The G5 does not have OS 9, only OS 10.2.
Both computers are on the same Windows network.

I want to be able to print from the G5 to the printer over the network.

You can install Mac OS 9 on the Power Mac G5, as Classic.

Classic is an emulation mode which runs on top of Mac OS X. By running
Classic, it will let you share a printer connected to the G5 with the
G4. I understand that right now, your printer is connected to your G4;
however, you would need to move it to the G5 for this to work.
Otherwise, I see no conceivable solution to your problem.

You can learn about installing Classic on your Power Mac G5 on this page:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=151871

After you install Classic, you can follow my above procedure to share the printer.

Cannot install classic on the G5 and the printer has to be connected to the G4.

That's unfortunate; otherwise, you would be able to use Mac OS X's
Printer Sharing feature to let the G4 act as a server. You can't do
this with OS 9 on the G4, unfortunately.

I have no more suggestions; I open this question to other researchers.
