I am looking for information (birth/death) exhibit history,
collections, museums, etc for Hungarian artist in glass named G.
Athory. He is mid-20th century, presumably in Budapest. He created a
series of etched, mirrored glass tiles depicting the astrological
signs of the zodiac. One can be seen <A
HREF="www.pickersplace.com/z5.jpg">HERE</A>. It is signed "G.
Athory--Hungary". A vague family history indicates he may have died
during WWII.

Thanks to the helpful comment byb robertmajoros, I searched again on
“Júlia Báthory” (searching with the accented letters did make a
difference :) )

On Google I found:

1. A page listing the contents of a Hungarian arts journal: Magyar
Iparművészet / Hungarian Applied Arts, third issue in the year 2000:
http://www.virtuartnet.hu/Mipmuv/2harmad/tarte.htm
One of the articles is entitled “Farewell to Júlia Báthory
(1901-2000), artist of glass” (by János Falus). Unfortunately, the
full text is not available on the site.
Contact details for this journal are: Editorial Office:
1052 Budapest, Semmelweis utca 1-3. II. 221., Tel.: 267-28-53,
26745-11/118, Tel./Fax: 267-28-53
I assume that this obituary will give you some information about her
life and work.

2. A page (http://www.svkol.cz/hns/hns96_6o.htm) from the newsletter
of a library in Olomouc, Czech Republic (Englsh home page
http://www.vkol.cz/english.htm Vedecká knihovna v Olomouci (Research
Library in Olomouc), email: library@vkol.cz)
This has the following reference to the catalog of an exhibition held
by the artist in Paris and Budapest in 1993: “Júlia Báthory : Párizs
- Budapest / [katalógust írta Vera Varga] - Budapest : Iparmuvészeti
Múzeum, 1993. - 63 s. - (brož.)596.922”

3. I followed up by searching on the “Iparmuvészeti Múzeum”, publisher
of the catalog mentioned above.
According to a page on cultural attractions in Budapest
(http://www.budapest.nu/culture.html ) this is the Museum of Applied
Arts.
A telephone number and address is given for the museum. Address: IX.,
Üllöi ut 33-34, Budapest, Phone: 217-5252 (another site which turned
up in the search gives the number as 217-5222).
Vera Varga, who catalogued the exhibition mentioned above is an art
historian based at this museum, and should be able to supply further
information. (I found this by searching further through the site from
ref. 2, and found an article written by her about iridescent glass
http://www.virtuartnet.hu/Mipmuv/2elso/tart.htm) I was unable to find
a web site or email address for the museum.

This is as far as I was able to go. I did extend the search to other
search engines, and also tried some other strategies, as listed below,
but was not successful in getting further information.

4. I tried searching on ULAN (Union List of Artists’ Names) at the
Paul Getty Institute
http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabulary/ulan/index.html , but
there was no entry for Júlia Báthory.

5. I also did a Google search on János Falus, the author of the
obituary, but did not come up with any contact details for him.

6. Lastly, I went to Pinakes, a metasite of metasites
(http://www.hw.ac.uk/libWWW/irn/pinakes/pinakes.html) which I often
use in my reference work. From there, I went to ADAM (Gateway to Art,
Design, Architecture and Media http://adam.ac.uk/ ) and browsed
“applied arts, glass”. I looked through a couple of the listed sites,
but was unable to find further useful information.

I hope at least that the two Hungarian leads supplied will enable you
to find out more about this artist. I also hope that you consider
this response satisfactory, given that very little information appears
to be available.

Great answer and a special thanks to Mr Majaros and tehuti-ga who
figured out that I had been reading the artist's name incorrectly for
20 years! What a wonderful service this is!

The name looks more like Bathory to me. However, I have not been able
to find any reference to an artist of that name, or one named Athory.

Tehuti is right, that is definitly Bathory. There was a woman called
Julia Bathory (Báthory Júlia), lived between 1901.12.31 and
2000.05.02., born and died in Budapest (capital city of Hungary). The
only exhibition of her i could find is in Dömsöd, a small vilage next
to Budapest, Hungary.
