I want an online service like a police "identi-kit" whereby clients
can look at pictures and put together a composite picture like their
assailants. Often the client is unable to explain what the person
looks like, but with pictures can get closer to a description.

Here are six online face-construction sites. You may want to
experiment with these to determine whether or not they are suited to
your purposes:

(To use Inter.Face, click on "Create your own portrait" at the top of the screen.)

These items of commercial software might be useful:

"Ever wondered how the police get those fascinatingly accurate
photofit pictures? Now you can make them yourself. Fresh from the TKKG
gang's detective laboratory, this program lets you draw everything and
everyone, produce 'wanted' posters, print out pictures, and publish
them on the Internet. You can construct portraits of politicians, pop
stars, athletes, and other famous people, or draw and put together the
faces of your family and friends--and even of your pet cats and dogs."

"Faces software is used by detectives to create a composite sketch
based on witness descriptions. Download a free demo version for PCs
here (File size, 10 MB):

Faces includes a CD-ROM database of nearly 4,000 unique facial
features. Using the point-and-click interface, a novice user can
create a complete picture in under 10 minutes. Composite pictures can
easily be created by investigators, witnesses and victims, with little
computer knowledge."

"Compu-Sketch the 'sketch artist on a disk' is the most comprehensive
sketching program available on the market today. With over 40,000
features and the ability to individually manipulate each one of the
possibilities are endless. A built in witness module stimulates the
memory and provides the basis for an accurate sketch. At $99 it's the
best buy on the market today!"

"ImageWare?s Suspect ID is a comprehensive suspect composite
application that gives law enforcement officers the ability to create
composites for any gender and ethnicity. Without artistic or extensive
computer experience, officers can not only develop detailed, accurate
composites, but also create custom wanted bulletins in color or black
and white.

With more than 1000 realistic facial features and accessories in the
database, Suspect ID users can independently size, trim and rotate
images to create more than 200 million facial combinations. And
composites can be seamlessly exported to ImageWare's Crime Lab image
editing software for further enhancement, such as creating alternate
looks and disguises."

witness's description. E-FIT? is unique since it recognises, and was
developed to include, the psychological factors that affect our
ability to recall and recognise faces. It has been designed so that
