The Order of Canada is Canada?s highest honor for lifetime
achievement. ?It was established in 1967 and since then more than
4,000 Canadians have been invested for their contribution in making
Canada a better country.?

?New appointments to the Order are made twice each year and lists are
announced around New Year's Day and Canada Day. The ceremony takes
place at Rideau Hall, and is broadcast on CPAC, the Cable Public
Affairs Channel. Three ceremonies are held each year.?

Nomination Procedure:

?If you know someone who has made a difference, you can nominate him
or her for the Order of Canada by completing a nomination form and
mailing it to the Chancellery, Rideau Hall, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0A1.
The Chancellery is the branch of the Governor General's office
responsible for administering Canadian honours.?

The Order of Canada nomination form is now available in Adobe Acrobat
format. You must have the Acrobat Reader, which is available at:

Note:  Serving federal and provincial politicians and judges are not
eligible, and no posthumous appointments are made.

An independent Advisory Council evaluates nominations and recommends
candidates to the Governor General. The number of appointments
each year is limited, and not everyone nominated is selected

Who decides who is appointed to the Order of Canada? 

?The Governor General, as Chancellor of the Order, makes the
appointments based on the recommendations of an Advisory Council.

The Advisory Council, which is chaired by the Chief Justice of Canada,
includes the Clerk of the Privy Council, the Deputy Minister of the
Department of Canadian Heritage, the Chairperson of the Canada Council
for the Arts, the President of the Royal Society of Canada, and the
Chairperson of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.
As well, two members of the Order are part of the Council for a
maximum three-year term.?
