This a question for Robert Skelton-ga who answered my recent question.
Robert, using your suggestions and tapping in to your observations I
have come up with an "experimental page" You can access it at the
bottom of my home page by clicking onto jazz band for wedding. You can
also type in jazz band for wedding and go to page 10 where I am
currently 98th!!! My question is: Will the ranking position for "jazz
band for wedding improve?".....have I followed your suggestions
correctly?....why are the people above me, above me? and why am I
continuing to loose my top ten rankings for other search terms? I have
recently lost top ten positions for a/. jazz band for wedding party.
b/. jazz agency c/.soul band for wedding. Best wishes from a
troubled, confused and panic stricken Jeff Williams

Hi again,

This is a comment rather than an answer, because it is based too much on guesswork.

Using the Google toolbar, I can see that your new page has a PageRank
of zero - whereas the rest of you site is above zero. The only guesses
for this I can make are:

1) It is new
------------
Sometimes you just have to wait - a PR0 sometimes means that Google
hasn't computed its value yet - something that should happen with the
next update.

2) Google thinks there is something fishy about it
--------------------------------------------------
I recently started a new website. It is totally clean, and has one
link from my main site. It has been given a PR0 and ranks poorly. Your
new page is different to the rest in that there is only one link to it
from your homepage, whereas all the other pages link to each other.

Also, the link is the same as the title. Since last Nov. Google has
been cracking down on sites that try to use link text to influence
ranking. Although it would be massively unfair, the combination of
link text and title and there only being one link to the page might
have triggered a filter.

3) It contains duplicated content
---------------------------------
Google has indexed the page as both:
http://www.jazznotjazz.co.uk/dan.htm
http://jazznotjazz.co.uk/dan.htm

Google treats sub-domains as seperate entities, and them tries to work
out if they are actually the same page later. Although extremely
widespread, www is actually a subdomain of the main site. If this is
the problem, time will sort it out.

Solution
--------
Link to your new page from some or all of your other pages, and use
different text in each link:

Weddings
Hire a Jazz Band for yout Weddding
Try a Jazz Wedding
etc...

And then wait.

Mmmm. So much of what you say is outside of my expertise. I have
passed your comments onto my website guy who will look them over and
then discuss them with me.

If I get the gist of what you say I suspect that the page appears to
Google what it is at present, ie: a contrived way of improving
rankings for a search term! It seems to me that you are saying it
needs to be linked to the rest of the site more before its
effectiveness can be measured.

I may have a follow up clarification question once my guy has digested
your thoughts, I hope this is ok. One of the problems at the moment is
working out when Google updates are taking place. They don`t seem to
be as structured as much as they used to be. Thanks for your speedy
reply. Regards Jeff.

Hello Robert, we corresponded recently. I have had word from my web
guy that he thinks he has linked the site up as per your
recommendations. I wonder if you could take a peep and see if he has
done as you suggested. Incidently, since last we conversed I lost
virtually all my good rankings in Google. As from today, for whatever
reason, they seem to be returning. From looking on Webmaster World.com
quite a few people are in the same boat. Seems that we may be entering
a new phase in the search engine algo`s with Google. Best Wishes and
many thanks Jeff.

All is looking good. Now your priority is to get links from other
sites. If you manage to get a couple of links from other sites that
point to the wedding band page, that might be all it takes.

BTW, I just noticed that your homepage has yellow on white text if
someone is browsing with images turned off, and is hard to read.
Google and other engines might decide that this is an attempt at
hidden text - unlikely but possible. Change the background color of
the page to red, for the sake of folk browsing with images switched
off.
