Hello daddyscocopops-ga:

By "local paper," I assume you mean the Springfield, Ill., newspaper?

I'm going to attempt to contact some historians in Springfield. I
can't find this anecdote online, or in biographies.

Your main concern is the recipient of the dishes, correct? You're not
as concerned with the china pattern?

(The pattern was undoubtedly noted in the original article. Up until
about the WW II era -- perhaps even later in some locales --small town
papers routinely reported such happenings as dinner parties & gifts
exchanged -- even when one of the guests hadn't just been elected
president!)

I'll see if I can find a Springfield area librarian or historian who
can assist us.

nancylynn-ga

I've also (along with NancyLynn-ga) been looking into this question,
and if you don't mind, I have a question for you.

Where/how did you first learn of this story? Did you read it in a
book, see it mentioned in a museum, hear it on TV, or what?

Any additional context that you could provide might be just the clue
to help us uncover the information you're seeking.

Thanks.

To nancylynn-ga and pafalafa-ga
Thanks for answering my question. Yes I believe it was in the
Springfield Il. paper. Many years ago I saw the article on a very old
clipping that was all dryed out and after awhile it just crumbled into
dust. My Mother had the clipping and it was given to her by a good
friend. This event was before 1946.

Hello daddyscocopops-ga:

I'm just giving you a status report: I have been in contact with the
Lincoln Home National Historic Site, which is under the National Park
Service:
http://www.nps.gov/liho/index.htm

The Lincoln Home's curator Susan M. Haake, and its historian, Tim
Townsend, have very graciously done some research, and provided me
with some promising leads and contacts.

I will continue to work on this question and then update you again (or
*possibly* even have the answer by) sometime next week. It may take
awhile for me to exchange e-mails with various people and then have
them hunt through archives, etc.

Regards,
nancylynn-ga

Thanks for the effort. In answer to how much I know about the gift of
dishes by the Lincolns, a close friend of my Mothers was the relative
of the receipient of the dishes and gave my Mother a dish along with
the clipping reporting the dinner and gift. I have seen the article
but it has long ago crumbled away. There must be a copy somewhere in
the archives of the old news papers.

Was your mother's friend a member of the Smith family of Springfield?
I have a C.M. Smith as the *possible* recipient of the dishes.

If it wasn't Smith, can you give me the surname of that family and
tell me if the family in question lived in Springfield?

Clarification of Question by daddyscocopops-ga on 26 Mar 2004 14:48 PST
I dont know about the name Smith, my Mother's friend was a Mrs Paul
Triss, and lived in Oak Park Illinois. Her mother was an art teacher
at the Art Institute of Chicago. It was a time when no young person
called parents friends by their fist name. They couls have been from
Springfield Il
Good Luck...

I'm afraid I haven't heard back from the two organizations the Lincoln
Home National Historic Site gave me.

I could search for researchers-for-hire in the Springfield, IL area.
Would that be acceptable?

I can try to get you a list of contacts there: researchers who can go
through local library archives.

Thanks to hlabadie-ga, we know that February 10 -12, 1861 would be a
good time-frame for the starting point of a newspaper archives search.

If you feel you should readjust the fee you feel is fair for that sort
of information, you can refer to these guidelines:

Hi:

Sorry I'm late getting back to you. You posted in "Comment," not
"Request For Clarification," so I wasn't aware of your response!

You may want to re-submit this question with a different price since
it seems I -- or another researcher -- likely won't be able to find
the answer on my own.

Since it looks like I'll have to go to "Plan B" and find some
Springfield, IL, area researchers-for-hire for you -- people who can
actually go into archives and dig around -- you may feel that $200 is
too much to pay me to assemble such a list of researchers.

Please review these pricing guidelines:
http://answers.google.com/answers/pricing.html
to decide if you should adjust your fee. I really can't advise you on
that -- the fee you want to pay is strictly your decision. (The top
fee is $200 and you can tip up to $100.)

I estimate that it will take me about 4 hours to research and assemble
such a list of researchers; however, I can't promise that any of these
researchers will actually be able to find the article you're seeking.

I just didn't want you to feel you were over-paying me as I probably
can't find the answer on my own, but likely, can only direct you to
researchers in Springfield.

I'm in the process of trying to contact some researchers in Illinois for you.

$200 may be far too much for you to pay me, really, for finding an
Illinois-based researcher for you -- especially since you're going to
have to pay an Illinois researcher to go through archives/libraries.

Please review these pricing guidelines:
http://answers.google.com/answers/pricing.html
to decide if you should adjust your fee. I really can't advise you on
that -- the fee you want to pay is strictly your decision.

If you would like to re-submit this question with a lower fee, please
feel free to do so. You can put "For nancylynn-ga" in the title of the
question if you'd like.

I'll get back to you again as soon as I connect with some researchers
in Illinois you can do this research for you. The article you're
seeking is undoubtedly on microfilm in a library or Lincoln archives
roo.. It's just a matter of finding a researcher to go into that
library to find it!

Hello again daddyscocopops-ga:

I'm just letting you know that we *may* be on the verge of solving
this mystery, thanks to the very kind help of Illinois State
Historian, Dr. Tom Schwartz, of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential
Library and Museum:
http://www.alincoln-library.com/Apps/default.asp
and the Abraham Lincoln Association:
http://www.alincolnassoc.com

If Dr. Schwartz can find this information, I'll be glad to donate a
portion of my fee to the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and
Museum.

If we have to go to "Plan B" and, instead of providing the answer, I
can only refer you to some researchers-for-hire in Illinois, I think
it would be very fair for you to re-post this question at a reduced
price of $50-$75.

I hope to get back to you in a few days, and I am mindful of the fact
that this question is set to expire next Monday.

Again, I hope to know more in a few days.

Regards,
nancylynn-ga

Hi Nancylynn-ga, Thanks for your help.. Dr. Schwartz sounds good to
me.I would be happy to go either way, plan a or b. How do I repost the
question at a reduced rate??? Or extend it beyond Monday?

Unfortunately, Dr. Schwartz's kind efforts were for naught! He, and
another associate at the new Lincoln Presidential Library, couldn't
find anything about a dinner party or the Lincolns' gift of china to
friends.

So, we now have to shift to "Plan B"! You can close this question by
contacting answers-support@google.com and asking them to close this
question. (You'll still be charged the 50-cent listing fee for this
question.)

Then, you simply re-post the question -- put "For nancylynn-ga" in the
title --at a lower price, and you'll be charged 50 cents for the
re-post.

You offered $75 and I think the $50-$75 range would be more than fair,
considering I can only get you halfway to the answer. (Researchers get
75% of the customer's fee, if that helps you decide how to set a fee.)

I'm the process of locating freelance researchers you can hire. When
you post your new question I'll list them, and I can also list
archives I've ruled out: at this point, I've been in touch with nearly
every history-related institution in Illinois and they've given me
some helpful leads.

The good news (as it were) is that, thanks to those kind experts
who've lent a helping hand, I've narrowed things down to the most
promising archives for a researcher to check. At least I can tell a
researcher where they shouldn't even bother to look!

So, for your new lower-priced question, I can lead you to some
freelance researchers who can do this searching on-site and, thanks to
the help of some Illinois historians, I can tell the researcher the
best starting points, as well as where NOT to search.

Regards,
nancylynn-ga

According to the Lincoln Log Chronology, Lincoln spent February 10,
1861 with friends in Springfield (as reported by the N.Y. Tribune on
Feb. 12).

http://www.stg.brown.edu/projects/lincoln/search.php?mm=2&dd=10&yyyy=1861

No name is given at this URL, but it should be possible to look up the
Tribune for that day.

Thanks to Nancylynn-ga & hlabadie-ga, Everything is so interesting and
I am amazed at the depth of research you can get to, perhaps the
dishes were presented at a different time, after the election, while
still in the law practice, before the election etc???? I was not aware
that the fee could be changed, My mistake thought Google max was $200.
What is a fair fee and what about a gratitudy? What about the
researchers for hire, sort of thought that was you two.. please keep
info coming Thanks
