Dear Connman06903,

I am confident that the movie you?re referring to is Otets Soldata
a.k.a. Father of a Soldier; Dzhariskacis Mama; A Soldier's Father;

The following review of the movie mentions that the father?s name is
Georgy Makharashvili and he?s an elderly peasant wine-grower from
Georgia searching for his son.

Father of a Soldier

?Georgy Makharashvili (Sergo Zakariadze) is an elderly peasant
wine-grower from Georgia. Receiving news that his tank-commander son
Goderdzi has been wounded and has ended up in a military hospital, he
vows to pay him a visit - but the journey (mostly by overcrowded
donkey-drawn cart piloted by a legless war veteran) takes so long that
by the time he arrives, Goderdzi has been patched up and sent back to
the front.?

?Refusing to return to his village empty-handed (not least because his
terrifying babushka of a wife would doubtless make mincemeat of him),
Georgy decides to track his son down, a journey that takes him over
the Soviet border and on to Berlin, which he reaches just as it's
being liberated in 1945.?

From All Movie Guide:

?In this war drama, set towards the end of WW II, a Georgian farmer
embarks upon a dangerous journey to find his son. His travails begin
after he learns that his boy, a soldier recently wounded in battle, is
recuperating in the hospital. The farmer sets off to see him.?

(..)

?He soon finds himself in the midst of a battle. This leads him to
join the Soviet army. He fights hard until his tank unit is assigned
to attack German vineyards. The destruction of such fertile land
appalls him and he stops them. When he finally does catch up with his
son, the boy has again been shot and dies in his father's arms.?

From the IMDB:

?This is the great movie about war. This is the story about an old
man, who takes a long journey through the war seeking his injured son.
He becomes a real father of soldiers with whom he fights shoulder by
shoulder. He reaches Berlin to finally find his son dead in his arms.?

Father of a Soldier
Djariskatsis Mama

?The ravages of war go under the microscope in this moving film,
directed by Rezo Chkheidze and first released in the 1965, about
Giorgi Makharashvili (Sergo Zaqariadze), a peasant who travels to see
his injured son at a hospital. When he gets there, he discovers that
his son, a soldier, has been treated and sent back to the front.

Thank you so much. In fact, had I been observant enough to correctly
spell Makharashvili (I needed the H after the K), my own search would
have found it. You have given me tons of good information, and a tip
is both for my guilt at my stupidity and for the quality of your work.
Thanks much. Malcolm
