I am doing some marketing research for a company that creates video
streaming applications for specific markets.

I am looking for universities in the U.S. that have psychology
departments that take advantage of high-technology to prepare their
student counselors.

An example of such a university would be Oakland University in Auburn
Hills, Michigan. They use video streaming technology to let
student-counselors record counseling sessions with clients. The
student-counselors later watch the counseling session with their
professors to help them improve their skills.

My filtering criteria for the universities themselves is:

* a four year psychology degree available
* at least 15,000 students
* embrace networking technology such as Internet access in dorm rooms
* use video streaming technology right now [not completely necessary,
but would be great to have]

Depending on how many schools you're looking for, your 15,000
student-body criteria might make the question a little prohibitive.
Finding psychology departments embracing "high tech" techniques
entails manually combing the web to find schools one by one. The
problem is, there are thousands of universities in total, and only a
few hundred are in the 15,000+ students range.

Do you require the schools to have that level of enrollment?

I understand the question, but am not sure why this enrollment level
would be a problem. Could you help me understand?

To clarify, the reason I chose this enrollment level was to narrow the
sample, thus, hopefully, providing an answerable question. I recognise
that there are colleges and universities of nearly every size that
would embrace such technology, and likely already do so. If, however,
there is any reason my line of thinking should be reconsidered, I am
certainly open.

No problem.

Locating universities that are employing high-tech methodologies
necessitates a manual process of combing through articles on the Web.
Once an article is found, and a university identified, it would then
be necessary to determine if its student body is greater than 15,000
(by checking against a [small] list of universities that have a
student body of greater than 15,000 - which is only a couple hundred
names). If the criteria were to include universities of any student
body, there is no need for a second filtering step.

With that in mind, not sure how many universities you were looking to
see in an answer -- I anticipate finding somewhere in the 8 to 15
range, but I can't be certain.

Also, for your other criteria -- are these requirements? E.g., if a
university were to be doing something high-tech in the classroom, is
it necessary to determine whether or not they have Internet access in
the dorm rooms or are doing something involving networks?

Thanks for the clarification.

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to clarify. I see your point, now.

The enrollment count is not a requirement. I can do another search on
the list for further information.

Internet access in the dorm was meant to be an example. I should have
been more clear. That said, if a school is using technology,
especially streaming video, in the classroom, that information is far
more valuable than the former.

I am much more interested in a potential customer base for
applications such as the example given for Oakland University than
anything else.

Thank you for your question. If you choose to rate this answer, please
do so after asking for any necessary clarification you may require.
Thank you for your understanding.

The following schools are using technology in their psychology programs:

University of Minnesota
http://dmc.umn.edu/small-grants/2001/mcClure.shtml
Audio and video streaming were incorporated into three of the initial
five classes. All of the audio streaming was linked from existing
web-based sources. Video streaming was produced in the VIDL by
encoding edited video segments of faculty introducing each of the
fifteen units in the courses. In our efforts to create this
comprehensive online major for undergraduates, we recognize the need
for additional technological enhancements. There are many aspects of
psychology which are difficult to translate into an online format
without visual effects. In many of our courses we have hands on
experiences which could be incorporated into an online environment
utilizing streaming capabilities. These would include such
experiential components as group dynamics, counseling skills
demonstrations, experiments in psychology, interviews with children,
expressive therapy demonstrations, meditation and Yoga, as well as
lectures by our faculty and guests from the community.

The Psychology Department has excellent teaching facilities. Courses
are conducted in several state of the art electronic classrooms
(e-classrooms) equipped with CD/DVD/VHS players, laptop computers, and
dedicated desktop computers with high-speed internet connections. A
dedicated laboratory features 20 computers that face an
instructor-controlled projection system, allowing students to complete
computer-based exercises and demonstrations during
lecture/discussions. Another computer laboratory contains twelve
computers, each in separate cubicles so that students may complete
exercises and research projects at their own pace. Additionally,
several seminar rooms are available to facilitate small group
discussions.

When the dust settles sometime next quarter, the psychology department
will have added two new labs to expand research and student learning
opportunities. A second-floor computer lab and a first-floor pigeon
lab will complement several other designated laboratories in the
psychology department. The department already includes a teaching
laboratory, a behavioral neuroscience lab set up for research with
rats, a health psychology laboratory filled with a variety of
high-tech equipment, and some clinical observation laboratory rooms
with one-way windows and state-of-the-art video equipment. In
addition, the department has several laboratory rooms frequently used
for studies in social psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental
psychology, motivation and other subfields of the discipline.

A new human psychophysiological laboratory is designed specifically
for undergraduates. The lab is the only one of its kind in the Pacific
Northwest and provides high-tech monitoring equipment. ?The
undergraduate research initiative is intended to create more
opportunities for in-depth experience and more material support to
student researchers,? says Professor John Hinson. Using the new
technology, students will execute the research projects that they
initiate. ?For example,? Hinson says, ?a student could investigate
evoked potential markers of cognition and behavior.? The evoked
potential is averaged electrical activity derived from the
electroncephalogram (EEG) that is taken from various regions of the
brain. ?Those evoked potentials will tell us which regions of the
brain are involved in important cognitive processes, such as risky
decision making, examples of which would include the choice to drink
to excess or the decision to use illegal drugs.?
