For the last three years, I have experienced allergy symptoms of a
strange and unique nature. I don't experience the running nose, itchy
red eyes, and scratchy throat that are most common (i DO get these
from cats and molds, but those are easy to avoid). My question is more
geared towards breathing problems I have had.

I have seen an allergist (and been tested for seasonal/food
allergies), and have been prescribed Allegra and Flonase. I have been
taking Allegra regularly for a year now, and Flonase whenever the
"seasonal" symptoms show up. The Allegra helps with most problems, BUT
I have developed this incredibly high sensitivity to humid air.
Whenever I take a breath, it seems to go directly to my stomach, and I
experience some bloating and need to burp the air out.

I work at the computer labs on campus, and there are lots of internal
fans around (obviously), and I experience this "air-to-stomach"
symptom there. As soon as I get outside, or away from the labs, the
symptom goes away.

The MOST peculiar thing also is that whenever I sing, the same symptom
occurs. I used to sing in chorus and acapella groups, so this is most
troublesome to me. Back then, I used to take an inahler, because I
would wheeze if I didn't use it. HOWEVER, there were no
"air-to-stomach" breathing problems, things stayed above the rib cage.

The Flonase and Allegra taken in conjunction does not prevent these
symptoms. Any help you can provide would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Have you talked to an M.D. about these "air-to-stomach" symptoms? I
once had a voice student who had very similar woes, and they turned
out to be Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

One thought that comes to mind is a hiatal hernia, where a portion of
the stomach comes up into the chest cavity through an enlargement of
the hole in the diaphragm where the esophagus normally passes. When
you breathe in the rib cage moves out and the diaphragm moves down,
enlarging the chest cavity and pulling air into the lungs. If a
portion of the stomach is also inside the chest cavity, air would get
pulled into it as well. I have not seen this description listed as a
symptom of hiatal hernia, but belching is certainly listed as a common
symptom. The most common symptom is heartburn/GERD and you didn't
specify if you are having problems with this as well. The hernia can
be sliding, meaning it moves back and forth, so the symptoms wouldn't
be present all the time. I can see how singing could affect it as you
tend to take bigger breaths, which could affect this. I have no idea
why humidity or fans would affect it though.

I have talked to an M.D., and he was the one who referred me to an allergist.

From your original question, it sounds like these symptoms did not
occur until *after* you got on allergy medication? If so, you should
talk to a doctor again.

I don't have any of the common symptoms associated with Irritable
Bowel Syndrome, either. The hernia sounds more plausible, but no
heartburn here.

My nasal passages seem to get almost tired, or even a little sore.
