reboot comp into safe mode (press f8 during initial boot up process),
right click my computer->device manager-> expand floppy drives right
click, and select remove (remove both entrys), reboot into bios to be
certain (as recommended) that the floppy is entered as A drive
(probably is). you should be prompted that a new device has been found
during boot up, and stick the win98 cd into the drive, and install
driver from cd. it might help to point to the win98 cd by specifying
the cd drive letter, and "win98" (w/ o quotes). take it slow, and you
will probably be successful. you can press the pause button on the
keybd to pause the boot process, and enter to resume. you can also use
the ctrl+alt+del key combination to abandon, and reboot if necessary.

get into your computers BIOS. to do this, it is normally displayed on
the monitor somewhere at the very begining of the boot process. (might
say "f1 setup" or PRESS DEL to RUN SETUP this should be listed in the
manuals.

once in the BIOS search around for anything that refers to the floppy
drive (1.44 A Floppy ) those are just some keywords, I have no clue
what bios you are running. you need to disable the B drive set it to
none. most likely this will all be TEXT driven so you will have to
follow the commands listed on the screen to move around. normally the
arrow keys work, some bioses (DELL) need ALT-P to switch page screens.
send me your laptop Make / model and I will give you step by step to
acomplish this.

in the good old days there is a DOS function called ASSIGN, but no longer..
for win98, the easiest way to do it, is add a line in Autoexec.bat file of c: drive

SUBST A: B:
