Hello Sportfreak315, The first champion trained by Hall of Famer Charlie Whittingham was Porterhouse owned by Mrs. Cloyce Tippett. ?Whittingham had 11 equine champions. His last was Flawlessly in 1993; his first was Porterhouse in 1953.? Las Vegas Review-Journal http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/1999/Apr-23-Fri-1999/sports/11042806.html June 10, 1953: ?Trainer Charlie Whittingham, at age 40, saddled his first stakes winner when Porterhouse, ridden by Bill Boland, won the National Stallion Stakes at Belmont Park. Porterhouse was later named champion two-year-old of 1953.? It looks totally clear to me that this information is correct. The .pdf file from Blood-Horse Magazine is an excellent reference. |

This article mentions "Liz" Whitney Tippett of Llangollen Farm. Perhaps you're remembering the Whitney name instead. Through the years not only the Commonwealth's commercial breeders, but great private breeders and racing owners had put it all on the line with their hearts and fortunes to make the Virginia Thoroughbred a force to be reckoned with in the world of racing - Paul Mellon of Rokeby Farms, Isabell Dodge Sloane, Admiral Cary T. Grayson, Whitney Stone of Morvan Stud, Theo Randolph, Thomas Mellon Evans of Buckland, Howell E. Jackson, "Liz" Whitney Tippett of Llangollen, Marion DuPont Scott of Montpelier, James and Alice Mills of Hickory Tree, Raymond Guest, Stephen C. Clark, and of course, the ever-persistent Christopher Chenery. http://www.vabred.org/history.cfm |
