Question ID: 319969
MY MSIE browser no longer will open any _blank browsers with any
content; they are all truly blank. I have been dealing with a
hijacked browser issue and perhaps have altered something. How do I
reset this? I have tried reloading MSIE, but no change. I am running
XP Professional. This does not happen if I use Netscape. Turning off
my firewall does not change this for MSIE.

Hi soulfulpsy,

Try this:

START / RUN

TYPE: regsvr32 urlmon.dll
(make sure to include the space)

Click OK / reboot

Please let us know how that goes -

Did that but no change for MSIE. Did run into a conflict with my HP
printer, though; Windows would not finish rebooting until I
disconnected the printer. Go figure.

Hi again soulfulpsy,

1) Make sure you have all the latest updates of IE6:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.asp#critical

2) Try repairing IE6:
Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs /
Choose "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6" / Click Add/Remove
Choose to "Repair Internet Explorer"

3) Run your System File Checker:
Start / Run / Type "sfc /scannow"
(no quotation marks, make sure there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

Hello, I have been away for a bit. I reviewed your the last
suggestions, but I had already tried deleting and re-installing MSIE.
However, was never able to delete it (it just keeps running) even
though it is unavailable in the add/remove programs screen. I have
ordered a CD copy since the download only adds to what already exists;
does not appear to be anyway to do a full reinstall. Also ran the
sfc/ scannow but nothing seems to have changed.

Thanks for the ideas.

Hi soulfulpsy,

My suggestion was to "repair" MSIE (# 2 above), not "delete" it (you
shouldn't even try).

Have you thoroughly scanned your system for virus, worms, spyware and such?

An excellent virus scan:

I know you did not say to delete MSIE; as I wrote, I had already
attempted to do that and have actually reloaded it. But no change. I
have run several of the other programs to no avail. I appreciate you
help, but I am about ready to call it quits. As I indicated in my
comments, I have spent more time on this than it would take writing a
chapter.

Go to you %root% (c:?) windows\system32\drivers\ect

Open hosts (With NotePad) located in that folder.

It should have a bunch of comments (# blah blah) then at the bottom:

127.0.0.1 localhost

That should be the ONLY entry for it. Erase any entries that are after
that. HOWEVER that one entry MUST remain.

Though I'am kinda confussed about your question? Is it full screen (f11)?

Also here is a fresh reg entries for MSIE

Open a new notepad and save cut and paist text (between the clips
below) and save as MSIE.reg then double click the file. Of course
editing the registry (hive) can be dangerous so backing up your
registry is advisable. This settings below are standard Win XP pro.
Othe things you can do is go to a previous save point (rollback). Post
more info and let us know if this works!

Hi, thanks. I tried both and no change. The _blank initiated browser
can be expanded to full screen but it does not have all the toolbars
and many of the menu items do not work. It is like it does not
completely load.

Go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download adaware.

Install it, and run the program.

Directly above the start button is a "check for updates" link.

Click the link and click connect to get any updates.

Click start to run the scan.

After the scan is done, it will list all the spyware it has found. If
they are not all selected, right click one and click select all. Then
click next and the files will be removed.

reboot the computer and that should fix the problem

Hi, go to
download spybotsS&D from http://www.tucows.com/preview/310138.html
install it, go to online tab and click "search for updates" then
download updates... run the scan...

spybotsS&D much better than adaware IMHO...

not necessarily a direct answer to your IE problem.. but have you
tried out firefox? firefox is a nice speed browser, with tabs.. there
have been many IE exploits released recently, and a switch to firefox
is a great way to beat them.

you can get the free browser at:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

ive been using it for quite some time and find it very handy.

best of luck!

Try these:

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am about ready to call it quits.
This has taken more time than writing a chapter for a book. I have
tried the IEFIX, & used it to reinstall MSIE but still not working.
The run *.dll files suggestion in the page reference worked only for
the first one; then it asked which program to use. I was unable to
get around that. So, for the time being, I am going to be using the
Firefox browser.

Peace.

I'm guessing that whatever's wrong is in the profile. Create another
user account and see if Explorer works in that one. If it does then
use that one and nuke the other account.
