I have a windows 2000 professional system acting as a Netbios SMB
server on a small office network.  Occassional the netbios processes
on it stop, and I have to restart them by right clicking on the
network icon on the desktop, and disabling and reeenabling TCP/IP
services.  What is the name of the process that handles the netbios
listen process and what is the likely issue here?

I believe the term you are looking for is 'keep-alive'
