I would like to know the starting teacher salaries of all the school
districts in Macomb County, Michigan.

Hello lizzardq-ga,

I haven?t been able to find anything on specific starting salaries for
teachers in Macomb County school districts. This information will be
extremely difficult to come by because teachers in the various school
districts are covered by collective bargaining agreements that are
negotiated on a district-by-district basis. I can provide you with a
listing of all public schools Macomb Country that includes links to
their websites so you can contact the ones that are of special
interest to you to get the starting salary information for yourself.
In addition, I can also provide you with some survey information about
Michigan teacher salaries. Would this meet your needs?

I look forward to your clarification.

Thank you for responding!

Unfortunately, I already have that kind of information. I was looking
for something more specific. I know when I graduated college 3 years
ago, we were given a sheet that had a chart that listed every school
district's starting salary for teachers (and even listed things like
how the salary changed when you got a masters and what the highest
salary was.) It was a very useful piece of information, but
unfortunately I lost that sheet and since that was 3 years ago, I'm
sure the information on it is outdated anyways. I tried to contact the
intermediate school district, but they have not responded. I already
have a listing of the schools in Macomb County, but am reluctant to
contact them myself because I heard that could affect your chances of
getting hired there. (Sounds ridiculous, I know, but I didn't want to
take that chance.) I've checked several websites myself and could not
find that information.

I know this is asking a lot, but something like the sheet I was given
in college would really help me out. If this is inpossible, what if I
gave you a list of 5-6 school districts in particular that I am
interested in, do you think you would be able to at least find out the
salaries for those districts?

Regardless, thank you very much for your time so far!

Have a fantastic day!!! :-)

Hello again lizzardq-ga,

I?m not surprised you?re having a tough time getting the information
about starting salaries. I?ve known others who had the same problem. I
have some further questions for you.

1) Have you asked your school to give you the current update of the
fact sheet you got when you graduated? Do you know if they prepared
similar information for the classes that graduated after you? It?s
definitely worth a try. You might also be able to get additional
information from your campus career center as well. They usually
provide services to alums, not just current students.

2) Do you know which union represents the teachers in the school
districts you would like to have information about? You might have
better luck getting the salary information from the union.

3) Do you know teachers who work in the school districts you?ve
targeted? They might be able to get you what you need.

4) You could post the list of schools you?re interested in and see if
a Researcher can get the salary information by contacting them or
through other means. Each school district might have a different
policy about releasing this information.

I look forward to further information from you.

If I can't get 5 or 6 out of the ten, is it ok if I choose in the
event that I run out of options, or would you prefer that I just
choose all the schools myself?

Thanks to both of you for responding so quickly!

To answer your questions, czh - I did contact my school to see if they
had an updated list, but apparently it was provided by an outside
organization and no one there had any information of who I could
contact to get it. I haven't talked to my university's career center,
but that's a good idea and I'll definitely give that a shot. I have no
idea which teacher unions represent the different schools and I do not
have any friends in the districts I am interested in to ask for help.

If possible, these are the districts I am interested in (listed in
order of preference):
1.Anchor Bay School District
2.Chippewa Valley School District
3.L'Anse Cruese School District
4.Warren Consolidated School District
5.Utica School District
6.Clintondale Community Schools
7.Fraser School District
8.Fitzgerald School District
9.Warren Woods School District
10.Centerline School District

If you cannot get the salary info for 5-6, it's okay to choose your
own, but I would really, really appreciate it if you could do your
best to at least find the top 3. I know this is a bit of a challenge,
and I greatly appreciate your help!!

Thanks again!
Liz

As it turns out this "public information" is a bit trickier to get
that first thought. I started with Anchor Bay and actually began
obtaining the base step pay from the Human Resources Department but
the list was rather lengthy (12 step increases). When I asked if
they'd fax me the list they began to ask questions about me and what I
wanted the information for. I explained that I was a researcher doing
work for GA and for some reason she began to be reluctant to discuss
it further, thus ending our conversation.

Had I explained that I was a potential applicant it might have gone
differently but of course I had to tell them the truth. I can't
explain why they balked at the idea of releasing public information,
but they did. I didn't proceed any further with the other schools
because I anticipated the same response. An applicant might have
better luck but a researcher is not someone they apparenly want to
deal with for some reason. I do have a list of Human Resources
telephone numbers and email addresses if you'd like that as an answer
(a do-it-yourself type project) but it appears that I am unable to get
the information myself.

That is so strange! She couldn't even tell you the starting salary
over the phone? I know some school districts are more reluctant to
share this information than other. During my own research, I found
several district list their entire step scale on their websites. Did
she say why she wouldn't give you the information?
I already have the human resource information for these districts, but
like I said before, I'm reluctant to call them myself (I heard that
for some reason it could hurt you when applying for a job. Why that is
- I have no idea, but I am reluctant to take that chance.)
I can understand why you'd be reluctant to go further because of your
experience with Anchor Bay, but what about calling the districts and
simply asking for just what the average starting salary is? Do you
think that would be possible?
In any case, thank you for your time. I really appreciate it! :-)

The Anchor Bay school Human Resources person started telling me the
steps over the phone. She told me the first two and then said there
were 12 steps all together. Suddenly she asked. "What is all this
for?" When I told her and asked if she'd be kind enough to fax the
data to me she stammered a bit with "Well, I don't know if I
should...", and "Maybe you should call..." and told me I needed to
call another number. She basically ended our conversation.

PS: The other number she directed me to refused outright to give me the data.

Maybe "starting salary" is misleading. I basically just want some idea
of what the districts start at (which I guess would be step 0.) I
don't need specifics or all the steps - I just want to have SOME idea
of what they pay or what their salaries start at.

Do you by any chance remember any of what she did tell you about the
first two steps? Are you still going to try the other school
districts?

In any case, I do sincerely appreciate your time and effort. I know
this might be a frustrating task and I really appreciate you trying to
help.

Have a great day!!! :-)

Hello again lizzardq-ga,

I've conducted other searches for teachers' salaries and I've found
that school districts are very touchy about releasing this
information. I think your best bet is to find teachers who are working
in the disctricts you're interested in and ask them for ballpark
figures on what are the entry-level salaries. I also suggest that you
find out which union represents the teachers and approach them for
general salary information. You could also look for news reports on
the last contract negotiations. In addition, I suggest that you talk
to your department head at the school you graduated from. Schools
frequently conduct surveys on where their graduates found employment
and how much they are earniong.

I'm sorry that it's so tough to get this information. Your best bet is
to try to get it through personal connections.

I do have those figures and I will try some of the other schools to
see if I can get lucky and find someone who will cooperate. I'll find
the answers for you if I can. Watch for me again tomorrow (March 31).

Dear lizzardq-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question. Well, today appears to be a new day and everyone seems a bit
more eager to cooperate. Here are the pay scales of the top 5 on your
list (excluding Warren Consolidated School District where I got no
answer in the Human Resources Department). These scales reflect the
current school year agreements, as most schools have not yet finalized
negotiations for the upcoming year:

. . . . . . . . . . .

Anchor Bay School District salary scale:
Step 1 Master?s - $37,765
Step 2 Master?s - $46,040
(Like I said, that?s all I could get out of these people. Presumably
the scale goes much higher than this.)

. . . . . . . . . . .

Chippewa Valley School District salary scale:
Basic Teacher certificate ? $33,876
Bachelor - $38,203
Master?s ? $39,809
Master?s w/special certificate ? $41,413
Step 2 Master?s ? $43,088
Phd ? $45,031

. . . . . . . . . . .

Clintondale School District salary scale:
(There are 10 pay steps but these are the starting, mid-range and
highest all requiring various bachelor degrees ? I didn?t want to push
my luck you know by demanding too much information so I settled with
these and was just happy to get them.)
$34,375
$46,459
$61,468

. . . . . . . . . . .

L?anse Creuse School District salary scale:
There are 10 steps here too ? 10 bachelors and 10 masters. Here are
the beginning and top end pay scales for each)
Beginning bachelor?s - $33893
Step 10 Bachelor?s - $61,843
Step 1 Master?s ? $37,661
Step 10 Master?s - $73,118

. . . . . . . . . . .

Warren Consolidated School District salary scale:
(no one was in the office to take my call)

. . . . . . . . . . .

Utica School District salary scale:
(This one was a bit more complicated due to the number of steps and
the number of various classifications so I had to settle for starting
pay and top end pay for each. Your guess is as good as mine about what
these classifications mean, but they probably make sense to ?you?.)

Bachelor
Step 1 - $35,614
Step 28 ? $66,503

Master?s
Step 1 - $36,987
Step 28- $77,830

Master?s with 15 years experience
Step 1- $38,467
Step 28- $81,353

EDF Step Pay
Step 1 - $39,167
Step 28- $82,053

Phd
Step 1 - $39,867
Step 28- $82,753

. . . . . . . . . . .

Fraser School District salary scale:

Bachelor?s with no experience
$37,336
Bachelor?s with 10 years experience
$59,787

Master?s degree
Step 1 - $41,851
Step 10 - $73,355

Master?s with 15 years experience
Step 1 - $43,200
Step 10 - $75,105

Master?s with 30 years experience
Step 1 - $44,472
Step 10 - $77,736

. . . . . . . . . . .

Hopefully this will give you an idea about the salary trends in this
area. I hope you find that my research exceeds your expectations. If
you have any questions about my research please post a clarification
request prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating
and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again
in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.
