I am looking for the page location, in the most recent edition, of the following quotes from Emile Durkheim's book, The Elementary Forms of the Religious life": "without symbols social sentiments could have only a precarious existence...if the movements by which these sentiments are expressed are connected with something that endures, the sentiments themselves become durable. These other things are constantly bringing them to mind and arousing them: it is as though the cause which excited them in the first place continued to act. Thus these systems of emblems, which are necessary if society is to become consious of itself, are no less indispensible for assuring the continuation of this consiousness>" also, same book: It will be remembered that the fabulous ancestors from whom each clan is supposed to be descended formerly lived on earth and left traces of their passage there. These traces consist especially in stones and rocks which are deposited at certain places, or which were formed at the spots where they entered the ground." |

Hello. The most recent copy that I could find is a 2001 edition from Oxford University Press. See the listing at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0192832557/ The translation in this edition varies slightly from what you cite, but the "without symbols" passage is on page 176. The "stones and rocks" passage is on page 244. If you're registered at Amazon, you may use the "search inside" feature to view the quotes. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0192832557/ ------ search strategy: amazon.com, durkheim, "Elementary Forms" "without symbols", "stones and rocks" I hope this helps. If anything is unclear, or you have difficulty using Amazon's "search inside," please use the "request clarification" feature to let me know. |
