I would like to have software that will help me organize my home
library. I would like the software to have the following features:
1. Be able to handle information regarding books, movies, and music.
However, I NEED it to do books; videos and music are optional.
2. It would be nice if it had online capabilities. For example, if I
typed in the ISBN number of the book, it could pull up all of the
book's information to save me time. However, I DO NOT want this to be
a web based service. I would like the software based out of my
computer.
3. It would have fields for all relevant information regarding a
book, such as edition, hardback, autographed?, condition, number of
pages, and obviously basic bibliographic information.
4. As I run a little lending library, it would have lending
capabilities. For example, it could tell me if a book is in our out,
who has it, when they took it, when it is due back, etc... It would
be nice to store information regarding the people I have lent to as
well (phone number, etc...)
5. I would like to be able to print labels (possibly with barcodes)
that I could put on my books. This would help with tracking, lending
etc... This would be nice but is not essential.
6. It should have full reporting capabilities. For example, if I
wanted to print out a report of all the books over 300 pages,
published before 1980, that are first editions, it could do that.
7. It would be wonderful if I could also use it to catalog notes and
other unpublished documents. For example, my wife is working on her
PhD in ancient literature. We have countless class notes, unpublished
writings, etc... I would like to be able to organize these as well.
This may be just dreaming.
8. I would like to be able to add custom fields as my needs grow and change.
9. Of course, it would be nice if it was free... If that does not
exist, I will gladly take suggestions for paid programs.
