I would like a complete list of street names within school district 13 in Huntington, New York. Patrs of the towns named Huntington Station (11746), South Huntington (11743) and Melville (11747) will fall within this school district. The school district is known as "South Huntington School District." The name of the high school is Walt Whitman H.S. | |

Here you go! An actual list with all the street names doesn't exist. However, with the map not only can you see the streets, but you can also see their arrangement. Try using the zoom feature to get a more detailed view. This map is of the area with zipcode 11743. To view the other areas, simply change this zip code in the lower right of the screen. http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&Pyt=Tmap&newFL=Use+Address+Below&addr=huntington&csz=11743&Country=us&Get%A0Map=Get+Map Hope I can get into the research team! Count = 3! |

I would imagine that sixpockets wanted to know exactly which streets form part of the school district... the map you referred to seems to be a normal map, simply showing the entire area without any kind of indication as to which streets belong to which school district. I think that if sixpockets had wanted a map of the general area, they could probably have found one since they already knew which towns and ZIP codes were involved... but the school district does not coincide with the town limits. |

Well, using the zoom feature on the map you can get a detailed view. Also he says which zip codes form a part of the school district. Anyway, what do you say SIXPCKETS-ga? Usefull? Not? |

Let me clarify my clarification. I have a map that shows the borders of the school district (not the ZIP codes) with every street drawn in. Not all of the little streets are labeled, but you can match them to a larger scale street atlas or something. |

Given time and motivation, a complete list of street names in that school district can be compiled. Unfortunately, I don't have acess to any GIS (Geographical Information System) software (and the effort to create even a simplified one to generate such a list would take the majority of a day). However, I'll post up the process, and perhaps someone who does happen to have access to GIS software can do it for you. The United States provides all data taken from census information via Tiger (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing system). http://tiger.census.gov/ This information includes spatial data for all counties, including streets and school district borders. You can find the 2000 census files for New York state at http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tigerua/NY/ Looking up Suffolk County at the Fips database, I find that Suffolk county has a fips code of 103 and New York state has a code of 36. Thus the file that contains data for Suffolk County is in the specific file http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tigerua/NY/TGR36103.ZIP For anyone interested in coding a GIS to use this data should look at this document http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tigerua/ua2ktgr.pdf Using the information in that document, a program can generate the lattitudes and longitudes of the vertices of the polygon that covers the school district. Then the program would find all the streets that are within the boundaries of the polygon. Hopefully, someone can do something with this information. Good luck. |

Hello, OK, I can tell you now that the chances of actually finding the information you seek online are slim to none. However, it must exist somewhere for election and administrative purposes. The Census Bureau has something called TIGER/Line files that basically give information for every address in the country. Unfortunately, the online guide to the field codes in the database (http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tiger2002/ch6_2002.pdf) lists school districts under "polygons," so it might only note the borders of the district rather than give you information for every street. I would contact the Suffolk County GIS Department at (631) 853-5191. You can also try the Board of Elections at (631) 852-4500, but they probably get their data from the GIS Department. Finally, you could simply try the school district. Good luck. |

I waited until this panned out before I posted anything. This involves a spatial overlay. One takes the TIGER street coverage and does an intersect with the TIGER school district boundaries. This can be done easily in just about any GIS package, including ESRI ARCGIS. As this is an actual GIS exercise and not a simple Q&A, I suspect you are going to have to pay someone to do this if the district(s) do not have the answer. As long as this can of worms has been opened, I'll tell you that the street attributes can easily be added as well, such as what types of roads they are, length etc. Please respond if you'd like more info. Best regards, FARVIN |
