I'm looking for information about large-scale domino rallies like the ones sometimes featured in the Guinness Book of Records. I'm not talking about the game of dominoes - I'm talking about events in which thousands or tens of thousands of dominoes are set up and then knocked down. Also, I'm not talking about the board game/toy "Domino Rally". I would like to expose myself to the Domino culture and see where and when events are taking place around the world. Also, videos of domino events would be great - as well as anything else relevant to these events. |

This domino rally thing is really a fascinating event. There are two important groups of people involved in domino rallies in the word. One is Chinese and the other one is Dutch. RTL Television here in Germany showed the last world record event (of the Dutch group) which was reached by the team of the dutch Robin Paul Weijers in november 2001. They reached 3.540.562 million of domino bricks to fall. I saw the event on TV and must admit that it has been one of the most existing shows I´ve ever seen. Kylie Minogue started the chain reaction by dropping the fist piece. The following link is the most important page about the event. The pages are in german but I´m sure that you´ll be able to follow. You´ll find a lot of photographs of the event, background info, an online domino-rally game and a lot more. In case you won´t be able to follow the texts please post a clarification request and I´ll translate the most important passages for you. RTL Televison Germany most important page about the event: ( http://www.rtl.de/rtlworld.html?page=http://www.rtl.de/quiz/dominoday.html&banner=/world/shows/domino_day&Color=150050 ) This event has been broadcast (not live) in the US as well. Endemol press release: ( http://www.endemol.com/press_services/press_releases_news_articl.jsp?record=152 ) Members of the domino day 2001 team have a homepage with some photos and a newspaper article: (http://tinaholewinski.tripod.com/domino_day.htm ) The boss of the dutch team who is a fanatic in the domino-rally business has an interesting page were he gives some details. You will find the following list of past and future event there: 27 December 1986 KLM Domino World Record Lisse - Holland set: 1.250.000 toppled: 755.836 2 January 1988 Europe in Domino Rosmalen - Holland set: 1.500.000 toppled: 1.382.101 28 August 1998 Domino D-Day; Visionland Leeuwarden - Holland set: 2.200.000 toppled: 1.605.757 5 November 1999 Domino Day 1999; Europa ohne Grenzen Zuidlaren - Holland set: 2.500.000 toppled: 2.472.480 31 December 1999 China & Japan Beijing - China set: unknown toppled: 2.751.518 3 November 2000 Domino Day 2000; Reaction Zuidlaren - Holland set: 3.112.000 toppled: 2.977.678 31 December 2000 China & Japan & South Korea Beijing - China set: 3.500.000 toppled: 3.407.535 16 November 2001 Domino Day 2001; Bridging the world MECC Maastricht - Holland set: 3.750.000 toppled: 3.540.562 15 November 2002 Domino Day 2002 FEC Leeuwarden Holland from: Weijers Domino Productions b.v: ( http://www.dominopr.nl/index1.htm ) You can contact Mr. Weijers by mail by visiting this page. ABC movies has an interesting article with focus on the american participants in the last world record: ABC Movies ( http://abc.abcnews.go.com/primetime/specials/domino_day.html ) Unfortunately I could not find sources for a video of one of the events. You know that all these shows are copyrighted and that could be the reason why no videos are available. You could have a try at ebay.com and maybe find somebody who could give you a copy. I found an offer at ebay.com which could be intersting for you. They sell a rare promo video about the last world record event there. (Auction ends in about 2 days so you should hurry up) Ebay.com page: ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1545151610 ) Well I hope that these pages and hints give you an impression what´s it all about. By the way: it´s rather difficult to find information about the chinese group involved in the domino business. till-ga | |

I'd just like to add a quick comment to say that in all my efforts to find out more about domino toppling (i'm an absolute fan) this is by far the most comprehensive information I've found. Saxonia do you ever let anyone see the Domino Days? Here's hoping! |
