I dont host my own DNS - i use a service like ZoneEdit. But I need to
have the following functionality. I need <anyname>.mydomain.com to go
one IP. So in the browser I should be able to go:
HTTP://xyz.mydomain.com to work just the same as
http://abc.mydomain.com or http://www.mydomain.com

Also - i dont want to have to set names up beforehand. I want
arbitary hostnames to be able to be used.

Yes, it can be done.

Add the following line to the zone data file for your domain:

*.mydomain.com. IN A <IP address of your machine>

Put it after the last "real" record in the file, and the DNS server
will look through the other records first. If it doesn't find a match,
it returns the "default" IP address.

For Zoneedit, the specific instructions for how to do this are at
http://www.zoneedit.com/doc/dynamic.html#faq11.
