Robert M. Newman, age 27, died in San Francisco in March of 1981. He was a grandson of "Mr. San Franciso," Cyril Magnin, a locally renowned businessman and patron of the arts. The San Francisco Examiner (or possibly the Chronicle) ran a fairly long appreciation of Newman's life shortly after his death. I am certain that it started on the front page and continued within, and it may have been in the Sunday Examiner/Chronicle (a joint publication on Sundays only), though I am not certain about that. Newman was a San Franisco native, a son of Walter S. Newman and Ellen Magnin Newman, a graduate of the Phillips Exeter Academy and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. I need to find the date of the article, or better yet a copy of it. |

Hello. The article that you remember appeared on Sunday, March 22, 1981, in the San Francisco Examiner & Chronicle (joint Sunday edition). The article began on the front page (A1) in the main Examiner news section, and it continued on to the back page of the same section. The title of the article is "Dead at 27. He packed a lot of living into short life." The author of the article is Caroline Pogash. Thus, to sum it all up: Sunday, March 22, 1981, San Francisco Examiner & Chronicle, p. A1, Caroline Pogash, "Dead at 27. He packed a lot of living into short life." The article is available on San Francisco Examiner microfilm, and I have read it. However, for copyright reasons, it would be unlawful for me to reproduce the text of the article here. I'm sure you understand. The San Francisco Examiner microfilm is available at several libraries, including San Francisco Public Library [ http://www.sfpl.org] and San Francisco State University [ http://www.library.sfsu.edu ]. If you need any more help on this, please use the "request clarification" to let me know. ------ search strategy: san francisco public library, looked at S.F. Chronicle index for 1981 Thank you! |

rated this answer:![]() That's it! Many many thanks. SF libraries are a little far away from Maine, but I believe the Boston Public Library has the Chron on microfilm (with any luck including the Examiner sections from Sundays...) |

Hello ryabushkin-ga! I was going to attempt an answer to your question, but have been frustrated thus far in my search, so I have unlocked it. The SF Chronicle/Examiner has records online, but only dating back to 1985, which was the earliest (albeit incomplete) archive I was able to locate. I have also been unable thus far to locate any references to the article you describe in any other publications. I also tried some semi-private search systems I have access to, but they also don't contain comprehensive archives of the Chronicle/Examiner, unfortunately. I plan to put a call in tomorrow to the San Francisco Chronicle and see if I can wheedle something out of the archives department. If I find anything, I'll certainly post it right away. Best regards, Cyclometh-ga |
