Is learning a second language an advantage or disadvantage to a child who has dyslexic difficulties of a phonological nature? I understand that early exposure to different languages can help to sensitise children to phonology. However, I have also seen dyslexics struggle with learning to spell in two languages that visually and phonologically are very similar, e.g. French and English. Also, is there a difference if the languages are acquired early or late? Thank you. |

I have a friend who wrote on that topic. I do not know much about this but I read her script and it was very well balanced. I cannot obtain any details of yours or post details of my to send you the script. However, there is a possibility for me to upload it and give you the url if this question is still active. I know there is a difference at what stage the learning process takes place. I am trilingual myself and two of them are native, one displays a distortion (English - started it late). A very interesting conclusion was that I do understand many intermediate languages and I could grasp the rough meaning of a Spanish text, though I have never attempted to speak or learn it. Why, I do not know and I cannot objectively justify this, it is rather your job : ). Though you mentioned English and French in one of your postings, I would rather prefer English-Spanish. French is way beyond my ability, even on a visual basis. |
