Question ID: 32329
Would like to know where we can get refurbished computers in large
quantities for usage in underpriviledged schools in Asia for a digital
divide project. The quantities should be at least 100 computers and
could go to 1000 computers or more. We would pay for shipping and
packing and maybe a nominal charge for the computers themselves. Are
there NGO's or liquidators/wholesale dealers who do this on a regular
basis. I would like a list and web addresses if possible. Any list of
funding organisations who would provide funds to buy computers and
other IT equipment for bridging the digital divide would also help.

I worked on a similar project with the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation, have you looked at their website to apply for a grant?

Hello carmencortez-

Have you contacted the Alameda County Computer Resource Center in the
United States (http://www.accrc.org) ?

They are possibly the worlds largest computer recyclers. I know for
sure that they would have the machines you are looking for, however I
am not sure if they would be able to provide the quantity you need.
That is why I am providing this information as a comment instead of an
official answer.

The ACCRC has donated machines on every continent on the world,
including Antartica. They have donated them to the Cambodian
government, the Russian Space Program, etc.

By all means, check them out.

The ACCRC is located at 5725 International BLVD. Building D.
Oakland, CA 94621

Mailing Address:
P.O. Box 2167
Oakland CA 94621

Phone: (510)434-1325
Fax: (510)434-1327
Email: accrc@accrc.org

Good luck!

This comment does not address your question of funding sources
for computers for India. However, you should be aware that there
is an organization approaching the same issue from a slightly different
angle. The Simputer organization has designed and is building powerful
very low-cost handheld machines designed for users with no computer skills.
The organization was formed by computer professionals based in India.
Their URL is: http://www.simputer.org/ You might wish to contact them.
