I?m putting together a presentation for a few people. I need an idea
for a short video. The video should last 1 ? 3 minutes. The concept to
be taught is how people tell themselves ?stories.? For example, if you
walked past someone in the hall at work and said ?hello? to them, but
they did not reply, then you might tell yourself a story such as they
are mad at you. In reality they may be thinking about something else.

The idea needs to be shown in three sections:
1. Some event occurs between two or more people that causes one of
them (Tom) to begin to tell himself a story.
2. Tom makes this known by having a conversation with someone else and
say something like ?Gee, I think Bill is mad at me because??
3. Bill then shows up and has a normal conversation in which he shows
that he is not mad at Tom.

I?ve already used the idea shown in the example. I need another one.

Please ask for a clarification if needed. Thanks.

1: You post a Question on Google Answers, hoping that you?ll get an
amazing response for your Two Bucks but, when nobody responds, you say
to yourself ?Why me? Does nobody love me anymore??

2: You go to lunch where you sob uncontrollably into your soup, your
can of Coke, your special pizza and your piece of chocolate
cheesecake. A waitress, seeing your obvious distress, says ?Say,
honey, nothing is as bad as that ? Share your troubles with me.? You
bare your soul.

3: The waitress listens carefully and then asks, ?You did remember to
hit Refresh, didn?t you?? You scream deliriously as they bundle you
into a straitjacket.

probonopublico: Hi and thanks for the suggestion. It's a pretty good
idea until number 3. But I think I can find a nice ending for it.

I've read a lot of your questions and comments and have enjoyed them
all. No doubt you're a witty a fun fellow. The researchers also seem
to enjoy your good sense of humor.

So now that you've replied to my question, does this mean that I have
a "probono 1"? (Similar to "Erdos 1".) I feel honored.

Best regards,
Summer95

Researchers: I'm still open to an official answer.

Hi, Summer95

Pleased to have helped.

It's very refreshing (Groan!) for me to get a compliment.

Yes, you are definitely a 'Probono 1' and, better still, you can now
advance to Fall95 but, please, do be careful.

Warmest regards

Bryan

Incidentally Summer95, you may be interested in Alain de Botton's
book, "Status Anxiety".

"This is a book about an almost universal anxiety that rarely gets
mentioned directly: an anxiety about what others think of us; about
whether we're judged a success or a failure, a winner or a loser. This
is a book about status anxiety.

Alain de Botton, bestselling author of The Consolations of Philosophy
and The Art of Travel, asks - with lucidity and charm - where worries
about our status come from and what if anything we can do to surmount
them."
