I'm planning a long road trip for vacation this summer. What are the
advantages of renting a car vs. driving your own? Financially
speaking is there a type of car that is best for this type of trip
(minivan)?

Kennelly2001 --

Much of the answer to this question depends on what you intend to do.
Two people travelling with a willingness to camp outside would make an
RV rental or a minivan economical -- but it depends on your desire for
creature comforts. Add a couple of kids and it may either be a great
adventure -- or folly.

Note, too, that camping is common and inexpensive west of the
Mississippi and least convenient in the northeaster U.S. But we don't
even know if you're in the U.S.!

Also, your rentals will be least expensive if the vehicle is being
returned to the spot that it was rented -- but you haven't indicated
whether that's your intent or not.

Clarifying some or all of this will help you get a better answer.

Best regards,

Apologies for being so vague...first time using this system. There
will be four of us travelling together from IN to southern Utah for
some backpacking/sightseeing during a six day period. The vehicle
would be returned to the same rental location. As far as creature
comforts, we're in it for the most economical way to see some of
Utah's finest backcountry. Hopefully this information helps. Thanks

Your question is a bit vague!
Are you travelling alone? How many will be travelling? What Type of
car do you have?
What kind of trip? Will you go CROSSCOUNTRY or back roads or motor ways???

I always rent for road trips. Here is why:

1. If the car breaks down, they come get you, at their expense, and
usually an upgraded car, and amenities.
2. Leaves miles/wear and tear off of your vehicle.
3. My car is small, I rent a bigger one (premium) for more room for kids.
4. My insurance covers me on rentals. (comprehensive and collision
[full coverage])
5. Gives me a chance to see what kind of car I might purchase in the future.

My friend and I took a month long road trip from Michigan to
California and back, and we took her car. It did not put hardly any
wear on it even though we drove 8 - 9 hrs a day for days on end! I
think taking your own car is the most economical. As long as your car
is reliable you really don't have to worry about it breaking down.
Also, all you have to pay for is gas! In addition, it's really nice to
be in the comfort of your own vehicle for such long trips - you know
the feel of it and it's limits. Plus, if you're going to be
backpacking you will be paying for the car to just sit there! Just
make sure you get the oil changed before the trip - that makes a big
difference!
