Hi mbhenry-ga,

Thanks for your question.

According to an obituary found in the vertical file on Robert Devereux
Eddy at the Digital Collections and Archives of Tufts University, he
died on January 28, 1983 in Winchester, MA.

From: archives@tufts.edu
Subject: Robert Devereux Eddy (1914-1983)

"According to the obituary in Professor Eddy's vertical file, he died
on January 28, 1983 in Winchester, MA, at the age of 68. If you would
like a copy of his obituary, we can make this available to you for a
small service fee of $1.00. You may post this information if you would
like."

My confusion over his death date arose because as late as 1989, he was
still listed as living in "American Men and Women of Science."
The entry in that source indicates Eddy was born on 15 October, 1914
in Providence, Rhode Island. He received his AB from Brown in 1935,
and his AM & PhD from Princeton in 1938. His academic appointments
included stints at Princeton, Dartmouth, and then eventually Tufts
University, where he held the rank of Emeritus Professor in chemistry.
His last address was in Winchester.

"Robert Devereux Eddy." American Men and Women of Science. New York:
R.R. Bowker, 17th ed., volume 2, p. 836.

Exceptional work! Thanks for keeping with it and nailing the answer.
The only question I have left is the birth and death years for Louise
Straus. If you find that one I'll throw in an extra 5 bucks for that
one.

I am working on an academic research project in which he is mentioned.
I am including the birth and death years of everyone I am mentioning
in this project. Can you provide some sources as to where you found
his death information?

There is a death record that matches:
ROBERT EDDY
15 Oct 1914
Jan 1983
68
Winchester, Middlesex, MA 01890

But based on the information provided, there are other possible matches:

I had found these same geneaology results as well. I'm not completely
convinced that they are the right Robert Devereux Eddy.

Although the birthdate in the SSDI appears to be accurate, my research
indicates he died between 1989 and 1993. I can still pursue this if
you'd like.

What I would really like is evidence that connects the person in the
SSDI to mathematics or to Princeton around 1939. This information will
be published in a fairly prominent book and I cannot afford for it to
be incorrect.

Oops... I actually meant that I would like to see a connection to
chemistry (not mathematics). Thanks.

Hi mbhenry-ga,

I'm am reasonably certain that Eddy was alive after 1983--the
information I found solidly puts his death between 1989 and 1993, and
it corroborates his degree in chemistry from Princeton. I have a
possible lead on the date of death but need further corroboration.

Thanks very much for the 5-star rating! I've left a comment on the
Louise Straus question.
