Does anyone know of a file manager that performs good complex searches
like the old Lotus Magellan? Should work under XP, be fast,
preferably not require indexing, should display in one window. A viewer
would be really nice and an interactive interface.

E.g. L:\*\pet*\*\*.XL? ??budget*.xls /after ?6/1/2003? /before
?7/1/2003? /containstext "lampshades" M:\*\*.wpd /before ?1/1/2001?
/containstext "planning" -"decorative" /size ">1000000" /datecreated
"> 1 year" /type archive -system ?hidden (d:\*\*.xls d:\*\*.123
d:\*\*.dbf) ?budget*.* /containstext ?food?

I.e Excel related files at least two directories from the root of L:
and whose parent directory begins with "pet" with last updated date
range given, but excluding files that start with "budget" and which
contain the text string "lampshades .AND. WordPerfect documents
anywhere on M: drive with the string "planning" but not "decorative,"
over a megabyte and with a date created more than one year prior to
current, with archive set but excluding system and hidden files, and
all 1-2-3, Excel and dbf files on d:, except those starting with
budget and containing text string ?food?.

E.g. * /containstext ?system +hidden /containstext -?trees? ?g:\*\*

I.e. All files on all drives, except G:, including hidden files but
excluding system files, and excluding files with text string ?trees.?

Alternatively a program that treats a very complex directory structure
like an SQL-queriable database might work.

Preferably under $30, can be used on multiple machines, with a file
viewer, launcher, text editor (or one key launches my text editor),
and the ability to then mark selected files and zip with options,
would be ideal. Also the ability to open multiple instances.

The old Lotus Magellan that ran under DOS back in the late 80s could
do all this (I still have a copy), but doesn?t handle long file names,
network shares and has a very limited number of files, not to mention
way out-of-date viewers. Oh, and of course I?d like to be able to
save the queery even if I have to copy and paste.

able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, stronger than a
locomotive... If only Lotus had!!!!!! I loved it....

You may wish to send an email to Bill Gross at idealab. He was the one

Hi, here is some info.

Quote "I used to use Lotus Magellan on DOS, and the best one on
Windows I found is something called dtSearch"

The dtSearch product line instantly searches gigabytes of text across
a desktop, network, Internet or Intranet site.

dtSearch products also serve as tools for publishing, with instant
searching, large document collections to Web sites or CD/DVDs.
