Can you store a software application on an external hard drive and use
it on more than one computer.

In general, no.  When you install a program it not only installs the
program files its own folder but also places files in the windows
directory and adds entries to the system registry.  Although this is
true for most programs Windows programs, there are exceptions such as
the game "Tribes." This also does not apply to DOS programs.
