I am an American who lived in Berlin in 2001-02, so I know about
several sources of information on the Web.  Most of the sites are only
in German.  Because Berlin is such a huge and exciting place -- with
many museums, for example -- it would take too long to translate all
of the possible event listings from those sites.

Luckily, there are two good sites with English versions -- both from
official Berlin web pages.

Probably the most useful link on this page is to the Event Search (
http://www.berlin.de/eventkalender/_bin/index.cgi?language=EN&stage=live&modus=HTML
).  Not all of the descriptions are in English, but there are still
plenty of English descriptions.  (Note: Be careful about the date
format when searching this database: dd.mm.yy .)

I hope that these pages are helpful.  The great thing about Berlin is
that one can go to almost any random museum, cultural institution, or
hotspot, and find something interesting to do.  Plus, there's usually
someone around in the tourist areas who speaks at least some English. 
 So I imagine that your friends will have an enjoyable time!
