Wow!
That's a VERY BIG question.
First and Foremost, by propaganda.
Second, by neutralising the Isolationists and the Peace Campaigners.
Third, by encouraging the nations who were opposed to the Nazi doctrines.
Fourth, by a massive rearmament programme which had the effect of
stimulating the economy out of the 30's Depression.
Fifth, by repealing the Neutrality Acts that prohibited the supply of
war materiel to belligerents.
Sixth, by by-passing the Johnson Act that prohibited the US from
giving credit to countries who had defaulted on their borrowings from
the US (mainly WW1 war Loans to Britain and France).
Seventh, by exchanging 50 old destroyers for British bases (arguably illegal).
Eighth, by providing HUGE Lend-Lease aid to Britain and the Russia.
Ninth, by patrolling its home waters to the advantage of the Allies.
Tenth, (arguably) by provoking Japan to attack Pearl Harbor, thus
paving the way to direct action. |
