I have about 100 spiral bound notebooks starting in 1976 where I
recorded ideas and drafts until shifted to computers in 1983. But I
still continued a few years as I enjoy handwriting and sketching -
then I shifted to Crosspad.

I would like to scan the pages of these notebooks, to be legible on a
computer and later to be made available online. I don't expect to OCR
them, at least at this time as I varied my styles of handwriting.

I plan to cut the pages from the notebooks, but would like to set my
system up for automatic scanning and storing. I have a DELL Dimension
8250 with XP-Pro. I have flat bed and 35mm slide scanners. I have
searched combo systems, but don't need the FAX and would prefer a
separate printer (to economize on ink); but I will accept with combo
printer if necessary. I don't want SCSI scanners (I had them!). USB
2.0 input preferred.

This will be a parallel action, so speed of scanning is not so vital -
unless the scanning blocks other use of my computer, or slows it too
much. But, I do need fairly good quality. My online searching has
found very little
specifics about auto input of sheets for scanning.

Can you help? Larry

We have approximately the same requirements as you describe at work,
and we use the HP ScanJet 5550c:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/15179-64195-215155-15202-215155-77360.html

It has an automatic document feeder for 35 pages. The scanner performs
very well and it is adequate to our needs (however, there are models
with a larger ADF capacity than 35 pages).

We had a ScanJet 5470 with an add-on ADF previously; the ADF had
frequent paper jams. However, we have not had a single paper jam with
the 5550c yet.
