Question ID: 324789
DELL and MS (KB) sites have failed me in numerous seeks of info or
instructions on how to modify the TOOLS pull-down menu in IE6. Mine
has two unwanted entries, 1 is MS Encarta, which I don't mind because
i suspect where it came from and know it is "clean", and one which is
called: GetThis4Free -which is a cancerous porn site that either
spyware or a friend inadvertently hooked up to. (There is no
GetThis4Free entry to addAndREMOVE pgms, although it is a
progy(.exe).) Linking to the website GetThis4Free.com looks like
asking for help (there) will make things worse, although an "image" of
a news page seems to reference "adding stuff to your TOOLS Menu". One
can add or remove tool bar items easily, but nowhere have i found how
to add or remove TOOLS MENU options (in IE6.) By the way, my TOOLS
MENU has 1)Mail-and-News, 2)Synchronize 3)WindowsUpdate 4)GetThis4Free
5)Define 6)Encarta Encylopedia 7)Internet Options I am using WIn ME
on DELL PC. Can someone please tell me how to remove an entry from
this menu, step-by-step. Thank you.

If you are comfortable with editing the registry, try looking here for
the GetThis4Free entry and deleting it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions

The closest I could found to an answer on Microsoft's site is how to
add extensions:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/browser/ext/tutorials/menu.asp

Hi I edited the registry, found button and extension data there for
getThis4free and deleted them, rebooted both gone now. I consider this
a great answer - tip coming.

Also Thanks for helpful comment, shubham - i will look for rogue dll's
as well, either now or when future problems like this might occur.
Best wishes. J.

Hi J,

I'm glad it worked, and it has also prompted me to remove similar
clutter from my own browser!

The answer is to edit the registry, easily achieved in Windows by
clicking on Start and selecting Run, then entering:

regedit

Drill down until you get to this location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions

...and look for an entry that mentions GetThis4Free. Delete the entry,
save the registry, reboot and it should be gone.

This procedure should work for deleting anything in the Tools menu, or
for that matter, you could add a program. Adding a program is
described on Microsoft's site (although, typically, they do not
address deleting entries)
http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/browser/ext/tutorials/menu.asp

Search keywords:
site:microsoft.com "from the tools menu" remove "internet explorer"

Sir(s)

I ran regedit and browsed to the said key...
There, i could find items in the Tools Menu...

However, the one i wanted to remove, was not listed...
I have checked all keys properly with their Button_Texts anURLs...
It seems to be absent there [while others are present]...
What should I go now? Where could be that key?

Any and all help is highly appreciated...
Thanks...
