I want to know if there is a consumer law in new jersey that protects
us from being cheated by companies. Here is what has happened:

I had the air condition guy replace my central air conditioner. He
said when hot weather comes it should decrease the temperature by at
least 20 degrees. Well I just turned it on for the first time
yesterday and after an hour only got down 2 degrees, my room
temperature went down from 85 to 83. The air coming out is not cold,
but I can hear the compressor in the ac unit working. Maybe it just
needs the freon or maybe the installation was not properly done, but
the company is avoiding me and not returning my phone calls.

I am looking for an answer that will show me all the steps necesseray
to either get my money back or get the person to come back and correct
his job poorly done. I paid $950 for this, and this new ac unit is
just as bad as the old one. WHat i am not looking for is the links to
the sites that talk about consumer law in general, I can search for
that on google.com myself. I really need help, Im sorry I can't offer
much, but hopefully a researcher that has lots of time will help me
out and learn for himself of how to stay protected. Thanks.

Well, I didn't find the actual law you need, but I DID find the actual
Complaint Form you can file with the State of New Jersey Department of
Law and Public Safety Division of Consumer Affairs. (
http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/ocp.htm )

They have both an online complaint form (
http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/ocp/ocpform.htm ) and one you can print
out and mail ( http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/form.pdf )

Filing either one of these should get the ball rolling for you in your
case against your air conditioner guy.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Well, what did I find not two seconds after I posted my answer? The
actual statutes, known collectively as the Consumer Fraud Act

Check with your local Better Business Bureau to see if there are any
other complaints filed against this company. You didn't mention
whether or not you signed a contract/agreement with this company for
them to do the work, which might have an effect on getting a better
outcome for you if you did sign a contract. Call your local TV news
station and see if they can refer you to a local consumer affairs
agency that would handle a complaint like yours.
