I am looking for a low potassium/potassium free diet because of the
renal condition. The patient is also diabetic and has a cardiac
condition. Am interested in something that can be bought from the
store and use it directly or that needs minimal preparation. Any meal
option/drink etc. Please advice the product and also where could it be
found and its price. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hi mscr7299-ga,

Renal patients are often advised to eat very low amounts of sodium,
potassium, phosphorus and protein, depending on the stage of renal
disease. This does not indicate a NO potassium diet however! Low salt
foods are indicated for heart patients as well. Diabetics are advised
to consume frequent smaller meals. Please ask a doctor or nutritionist
for diet advice, particular to the patients?s needs.

I have found several souces for prepared meals and nutritional drinks
that can be ordered online, as well as some frozen meals that can be
purchased in a regular grocery store.

diets. Food choices here are limited, of course, but if transportation
might be an issue, this can save transportation. Items on this page
are of a low protein diet, for renal/kidney patients. Select

heading.

Thanks, Your answer certainly helps, however, the patient is in India and
the journey to India is about 20 hours by air so carrying the stuff
does not seem an option. Are there any powdery food items available..?
Or any company that sells similar stuff in India..?

I know I missed mentioning this in my original question but any help
will be appreciated. My rating to your answer will be the highest and
I will go ahead and pay regardless of your future answer.

Thanks in anticipation,
PR- mscr7299-ga

Hi mscr7299,

Thank you for rating so generously! That was very kind, considering
the answer does not pertain to India!

I have searched for a powdered form of nutrtional meal you could carry
with you, but found none adequate for renal patients. I found
absolutely nothing on Indian sites. This does not mean that meals
can't be found there. It has been my experience that some countries
simply don't put as much online as others.

I'm afraid all I can recommend is contacting the Narmada Kidney Center
upon arriving in India. They may be able to assist you in locating the
food items you need. Another thought, is, if the patient has someone
to assist them, is to prepare a week or two's meals at one time, and
freeze them in zip lock bags. Once can be pulled out for each meal,
and warmed up as needed. I did this for my husband while I had to be
away for a few weeks, and he was most grateful!

Check with some pharmacies in India also. The pharmacist may be able
to order nutritional drinks for renal patients from pharmaceutical
companies such as Ross and Abbott.

NARMADA KIDNEY FOUNDATION is located in Mumbai, India. They may have
some suggestions for obtaining prepared, instant, or frozen foods to
meet your needs, in India. (There is a map on this page as well)

Please note two points:
a) Potassium is an essential ion in our diets; our nerve cells use it
to transmit signals. Too little of potassium can kill, as well as too
much. Take care.
