The reason a dentist will do a root canal is because decay is too
close to the nerve or too much of the tooth has been lost. If the
teeth broke then the dentist probably did not have enough tooth left
to hold a new bridge or a new crown or to hold a filling. The tooth
may already have been "dead" and the dentist needed to take out the
nerve and put in a POST in the space where the nerve was. Then he
could attach something to the post...like a crown or a bridge.
