Hello lakangol-ga,

The most recent official data available on employment by occupation in
the United States can be found at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
(BLS) website.
http://www.bls.gov

The employment numbers for the ?Major Occupational Groups? for 2002
are listed at the following BLS webpage:

U.S. Department of Labor
Bureau of Labor Statistics
Occupational Employment Statistics
http://www.bls.gov/oes/home.htm

To find the information that you are looking for, click on ?Tables
Created by BLS? (the third item down).

For the Baltimore data, click on ?2002 Metropolitan Area Cross-Industry.?

This takes you to the following webpage:

U.S. Department of Labor
Bureau of Labor Statistics
Occupational Employment Statistics
2002 Metropolitan Area Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates
http://www.bls.gov/oes/2002/oessrcma.htm

Scroll down to Maryland in the list of states, then click on Baltimore.

Bureau of Labor Statistics
Occupational Employment Statistics
2002 Metropolitan Area Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates
Baltimore, MD PMSA
http://www.bls.gov/oes/2002/oes_0720.htm

Click on ?15-0000 Computer and Mathematical Occupations.?

2002 Metropolitan Area Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates
Baltimore, MD PMSA
Computer and Mathematical Occupations
http://www.bls.gov/oes/2002/oes_0720.htm#b15-0000

The total employment for Computer and Mathematical Occupations in the
Baltimore, MD primary metropolitan statistical area (PMSA) is 37,390.

This includes:

Computer and Information Scientists, Research 620
Computer Programmers 4,790
Computer Software Engineers, Applications 4,340
Computer Software Engineers, Systems Software 5,480
Computer Support Specialists 4,650
Computer Systems Analysts 7,940
Database Administrators 980
Network and Computer Systems Administrators 2,570
Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts 2,150
Actuaries 150
Operations Research Analysts 640
Statisticians 230

?(1) Data for detailed occupations does not sum to the totals because
the totals include data for occupations not shown separately.
Estimates do not include self-employed workers.?

In estimating IT professionals, you probably want to exclude the
Actuaries, Operations Research Analysts, and Statisticians.

This gives you an estimate of 36,370 IT professionals in Baltimore.

For the Washington, D.C. data, go back to:

U.S. Department of Labor
Bureau of Labor Statistics
Occupational Employment Statistics
http://www.bls.gov/oes/home.htm#tables

Click on ?2002 State Cross-Industry.? Scroll down to ?District of
Columbia? or click on DC in the map.

U.S. Department of Labor
Bureau of Labor Statistics
Occupational Employment Statistics
2002 State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates
District of Columbia
http://www.bls.gov/oes/2002/oes_dc.htm

Click on ?15-0000 Computer and Mathematical Occupations.?

The total employment for Computer and Mathematical Occupations in the
District of Columbia is 26,130.

This includes:

Computer and Information Scientists, Research 420
Computer Programmers 3,430
Computer Software Engineers, Applications 1,690
Computer Software Engineers, Systems Software 1,330
Computer Support Specialists 3,160
Computer Systems Analysts 8,830
Database Administrators 1,210
Network and Computer Systems Administrators 2,040
Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts 1,120
Actuaries 150
Operations Research Analysts 770
Statisticians 910

?(1) Data for detailed occupations does not sum to the totals because
the totals include data for occupations not shown separately.
Estimates do not include self-employed workers.?

Once again, in estimating IT professionals, you probably want to
exclude the Actuaries, Operations Research Analysts, and
Statisticians.

This gives you an estimate of 24,300 IT professionals in Washington, DC.

Therefore, an estimate of the total number of IT professionals in the
Washington DC, Baltimore metropolitan area is 36,370 + 24,300 =
60,670.

You may also want to take a look at the numbers for the Washington,
DC-MD-VA-WV PMSA which includes the District of Columbia, and parts of
Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
