how do install java on firefox?

If you're using Firefox ( For Windows ), you can install Java Within Firefox.
Just click on the following link in Firefox:
http://java.sun.com/update/1.4.2/j2re-1_4_2_04-windows-i586.xpi

If that doesn't work, please click on that link found at this page:
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/java.html

So will this work on OS X?  I tried installing that link and it
doesn't work.  I notice the link says "windows".  The
plugindoc.mozdev.org says that 1.4.2 doesn't work on the Mac.  Is
there an older version that does work?

Sorry, I assumed you were a Windows User.
I have actually tried Firefox for OS X and have not experienced any problems.

Since you want to use Firefox on OS X, you do not have to install Java.
