Hi, mschulman. As lynette mentioned, the best resource for finding
information about relocating to the Marshall Islands is the US Embassy
(http://www.rmiembassyus.org/index.html ). I spoke with Mr. Matt
Zackhras, the Deputy Chief of Mission there, and he was very helpful.

Embassy of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to the United States
2433 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20008
Phone: (202) 234-5414
Fax: (202) 232-3236
http://www.rmiembassyus.org/embassy/embassy.html

Assuming you are a US Citizen, there is no Visa requirement and,
provided you have enough cash, you can stay there as long as you like.

If you'd like to set up a business there, you'll need a Foreign
Investment Business License. There is an application process and a
non-refundable fee of $2,500.

Additional business information is available on the Marshall Island's
Corporate and Maritime Administrator site:
http://www.register-iri.com/content.cfm?catid=2

There are quite a few business incentives for foreign investors. The
Embassy website states that businesses "engaged in deep sea fishing,
manufacturing for export, agriculture, hotel/resort operation are
granted a five year gross revenue tax holiday. Businesses engaged in
manufacturing, hotel/resort operation and fisheries are exempt from
import taxes. In addition to these incentives, the RMI enjoys numerous
exporting advantages. Under its freely associated political status
with the US, the RMI is granted duty free and quota free access on all
articles wholly grown, made or produced in the RMI (except for
specified categories). This opens up enormous opportunities for export
oriented developments."

You might contact some of the existing businesses there to get a feel
the general business climate (we know the weather's great!). Robert
Reimers Enterprises owns a quite a few and might be a good jumping off
point.

To bring your cat or dog, you'll need to present an international
animal health certificate, attesting to the animal's good health (no
rabies, ectoparasites, worms) and vaccinations. When the animal
arrives in the RMI, it will be taken into quarantine until released by
an Inspector.

For specifics on the health certificate requirements and an
Application for Plant & Animal Quarantine Permit, contact the Embassy
at (202) 234-5414 and they will kindly fax it to you.

I have no other efforts to which to compare this answer, but I am
impressed by your researcher's acpacity to turn up more info than I
did in my own surfing. Which is the point, isn't it? Thanks, Zrica.

The local US embassy would be a good source of information on expatriate
issues, often they can also point you in the direction of social clubs too.
Their web site is http://usembassy.state.gov/majuro/ There is limited
information on their site, but you could try emailing them on
publicmajuro@state.gov

Another site which might be helpful is http://www.rmiembassyus.org/ which is
the Republic of the Marshall Islands homepage.

I'm not sure which island you're thinking of moving to, but there is a
community site dedicated to Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands here which seems
to have quite an active discussion board:
http://communities.msn.com/KwajaleinMarshallIslandCommunity
Someone has asked a question about bringing their dog to Kwajalein in in this
posting:
http://communities.msn.com/KwajaleinMarshallIslandCommunity/general.msnw?
action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=240&LastModified=4675362347230660865
The reply was "You will need to get in contact with the Veterinary Clinic on
Kwaj about bringing your pet ... When I was there (97-99) they only allowed a
fixed number of pets to be brought onto the island once they reached that
number, new pet permits were turned down ... Not sure if their number is the
same or not but it used to be 805-355-2017" Typically the quarantine
restrictions would be similar for the entire region, so this makes me suspect
there would be similar rules for the other islands.

Hope this helps,
lynetter :-)
